Test shot with DA*55 and AF extension tube

So I bought a 2x AF TC this week with the intention of removing the glass to make a fully functional extension tube. Getting the glass out was easier than I thought it would be and so I had a chance to try it out with quite a few different lenses tonight. I'll probably fool around with it a little more this weekend, but here's a 100% crop from a shot taken with the DA*55 (of a DA*16-50) and my new extension tube. The focus was actually AF in live-view as the PZ contacts on the TC allow AF of the DA*55

edit: despite how I cropped the shot below, the focus was actually on the red star. I didn't realize that despite shooting at f/11, the DOF is only about 0.1 inches!

K-5 + DA*55 + 25mm tube, f/11, 2s, iso200

Looks like it was worth the effort! I've got to watch for one.

That is a fantastic plan. Why did I sell my Kenko 1.5 Pz because this would be a great use for it.

Now the glass is gone is the AF working as normal?

Yeah, it worked out pretty well. I'm not sure I'd gut a Kenko PZ as they're worth about $150 and the only difference would be a slightly thinner (but much more expensive) extension tube. I paid a little over $30 shipped for the one I removed the glass from, so it seemed more reasonable in that respect.

Regarding the AF, AF works with all screw driven lenses and some SDM lenses. I saw some because if it didn't work with the glass in there, it probably won't work without it. For example, my DA*50-135 didn't work with it but the DA*55 did. Regardless, the AF isn't really that useful as it's pretty slow with the extension tube on there and the DOF is so thin that you're almost going to have to be on a tripod where MF+LV is going to likely be the best bet. Nonetheless, the shot above was taken using AF just to see if it would work properly.

Where did you buy it? For my purpose a thinner one would be fine, just to use for close-up and not for macro/micro work.

All things equal I'd probably prefer a thinner one too (or one of each ). Something around the thickness of a 1.4x would be perfect for close-up work with a lens like the FA*85 when you aren't looking to get close to 1:1. That said, I didn't want to remove the glass from my Tamron 1.4x Pz-AF as I might actually want to use it as TC once in a while. The 2X TCs (even with Pz-AF and "A" contacts") can often be found a lot cheaper, usually between $25-50 (although the Tamron 2X sometimes sells for $75-100).

I got this particular one in the marketplace a couple days ago (link).

Actually haven't pulled out the 85 yet, mainly was playing with the FA135 and DA*55.

Here's another quick shot with the DA*55 at about 1:2 magnification. Again, AF in LV, which seems to work pretty well. You can actually see the build up of the ink of the box

K-5 + DA*55 + 25mm ext tube, f/8, 1/2s, iso100, original in the upper left corner
