If you have the money go for 31. It's worth all they are asking for it!
Option #2 would be if you could get FA35/2.
Sigma would be my 3rd pick, 35/2.4 4th and 35Ltd last one.

I also agree that the FA 31 would be the way to go, if you have the cash to spare.

The DA 35 2.4 is a nice lense (I own one), but does not compare to the 31.

I've used none of those mentioned, so my opinion is completely untainted by facts.

BUT... I gravitate towards speed. And manual primes, so I carry a Vivitar-Kiron 24/2, Vivitar-Komine Close-Focus 28/2, and Nikkor-O 35/2. When I'm filling holes in my line-up, I look for lenses that are significantly faster than what my zooms can do. Of the candidates, I'd go for the 30/1.4, the "fast standard".

BUT... I also like "pixie-dusted" slower glass, like an Isco Westron 35/2.8 and CZJ Tessar 50/2.8 (aluminium body, 13 iris blades). So The FA31 would be awfully tempting. Only 2/3-stop slower. Legendary. Ooh ooh... Maybe it's time to just flip a coin.

I paid for 2 day shipping, and they have it down to be delivered Monday. Oh well, that's what I was expecting, but I kept hoping.

There was a lot of that in my thinking - I kept thinking about how the FA31 would have better bokeh. About how while it was nice to have the macro's close focusing, if I wanted macro I'd use the 105 macro I also own, etc. I kept thinking "what if..."

Tonto, I have both the DA 35 macro and the FA 31. The DA is a great lens, rated by some who know better than me as perhaps the best autofocus lens of all time, but if you can afford it, get the Fa31. You will never regret it, and as the finance minister is also a shooter, she will be able to come to grips with the extra cash once she sees her first pics.

I was in SF about 8 years ago and had a ball. It sort of reminded me of Sydney in layout/look because of the bay, and Melbourne because of the feel/people

This was when the Pacific Peso was around US.46c. Now that it is almost $1.10 it would be even better. I imagine it will be like getting a 10% discount of every price you see. Nice one.

Whatever you do, have fun!

Ohhh Nooooo!
I got word from Chuck at B&H today that they had just 3x FA 31s left. I was at work all day and had to scoot back home only to find "Sold Out"
That will teach me to wait on it. So.....I'm just gonna order and hopefully restock soon, unlikely to get before the trip which is a shame, oh well what can you do?

Not too surprising since B&H has the lowest price I'm aware of on the 31, and by $150! I think they should be commended for not jacking it up a couple of weeks ago when everyone else did.

Wow! Glad I pre-ordered when I did, my other half had suggested waiting until it was in stock. Have fun on your trip anyway.

Received my 31 today. I pre-ordered a couple of weeks ago. I feel "whole" now as my FA Ltd. collection is complete. I'm too busy trying to keep flood waters out of my in-laws house to play with it much, but I did manage a few quick snaps to test for proper function, and I must say that I already "get it". I can tell I will be spending lots of quality time with this baby over the years. Optically speaking, I think I got a wonderful (read: normal) copy, though it will require more testing when I am able. Aperture blades seem to be aligned perfectly. I'm a happy dude!

+1 for the FA31mm.

Once you use it, you understand why it has such a high reputation.
