Notice that the $150 ƒ/1.2 lens suffered from a sticky diaphragm and would not always fully open. When is a 1.2 lens not a 1.2 lens? When it only opens to ƒ/2.

There is your mistake.

It is an easy mistake to make, even when you know what you are looking for. I once got really excited about a 1:1.2 on eBay that was going for $5. I checked it several times before I finally realized that it was actually a 1:2.
I didn't assume that it was a 1.2 because I was too stupid to look at the pictures and figure out what lens it was, I assumed because the seller wrote 1.2.

My apologies. I didn't mean to use such a harsh word

Now, someone sell me their 1.2 for cheap to make me feel better!

I have a few M50 1.2's I'll sell cheap. Oops, no, they're really 1:2's. Maybe a black magic marker can convert the ':'s to '.'s, eh?

If it looks too good to be true.

It is.

About 2 weeks ago, I managed to find a guy selling some Pentax film body and some lenses. He listed that he had a 50mm f2 and an f1.2.
I found the same ad and went to see the lens around about the same time. Saw that the lens was a 1:2 even though he kept calling it a 1.2. He called the other lens a 1.14. Had a nice talk with him, but didn't end up buying anything.

I wouldn't mind having a 1:1.2, but they're hard to come by.

I had a not-so-nice talk with him. He just would not let me leave. Is your name Mike or Mark? I remember him saying he just got off the phone with someone else interested in the "1.2" when I got there.

I got my hopes up allllll high cause he also had a 1:2 for sale so I thought, "how could he mix them up like that if he has both" ... Oh how I was wrong.

I just sold my Porst 50/1,2 on bay. First it was sitting on the self for two years and when I tried it on my K-5 it had such a color aberration that it could have used just for psychedelic photography.
On the other hand I use my Rikenon 55/1,4 all the time when I hunt for great bokeh and sharp wide open. It has way less CA at 1,4 than the Porst had.
I know the feeling when you decide to want/need something. I have bought and sold tens of lenses this spring after I got K-5. We had K10D before and I never bothered with old glass that much and actually it was mostly my wife's camera. So my point is to test before you buy if you can. I have become very hesitant to buy anything over 25EUR without deep thought.

sorry for the mistype, that was me dropping it in as an m, here is the actual listing (not even sure if that is the actual listing I saw, but this one went for cheaper):

Pentax SMC 50mm 1:1.2 Lens | eBay
I'll guarantee whoever got that lens LIVES on ebay, scanning listings all the time. There is no way anyone who knew what they were looking at would have let that pass. I know I wouldn't have. Easy $200 profit if not more.

Even with the sticky aperture (as one post mentioned), that is a relatively easy fix...

Yup - Mike. He was quite a talker, that one. I didn't have very high hopes; I figured there was a pretty good chance it was a mistake. I don't see many copies of the 1.2 for sale. I figure one of these days I'll hit on a treasure trove, but I'll have to wade through a bunch of junk to get there.

I’m not so sure $150 for a damaged K50/1.2 is a good deal. Provided the issue is fixable, it will cost you another $100 to get it CLAed if you include return postage. Considering the exposed rear element of a K50/1.2; “I see dust of some sort inside the lens area and I found it without a rear cap so something might have gotten inside.” is not something you want to hear.

$250 is about the starting price of an E+ copy with no issues, so it would be wise to spend the extra $100 up front and go that route. Also check out the feedback from the seller, the other items he has sold are not camera related so he most likely has no clue on the real condition of the lens. I just see red flags on this one.

Phil.

I'd like to get my hands on this one -> Vivitar Series1 55mm f1:1.2 Lens Pentax K Mount Rare! | eBay

Just a little pricey for me at the moment...

Edit: and this one here, funny - this thing has been listed for over 2 years now - http://cgi.ebay.com/Pentax-SMC-50-1-2-K-version-1207845-/270280253845?pt=Cam...ht_1121wt_1139

27 offers have been made on it and all declined, by the time they sell that thing, the listing and re-listing fees will surpass what they will sell it for...
