BTW, I also had a gold reflector camera right, but had to get it so far back that I'm not sure it did any good. Uploaded, skin tones look a bit peekid.

I think you need to post some more information for us to help you better with the shot.

1. What was the ambient like? ie: was it sunny? cloudy? late eveneing? early morning?
2. What camera settings did you use, ISO, shutter, Aperture
3. What camera mode where you in? Av? M?
4. What flash settings did you use? p-ttl? any compensation?

Well, I tried the flash out, not sure I like the results. What should I have done differently here? I don't know if I really knew how to set the thing right.
It looks as though you could have angled the flash to about 45degrees. I see shadows in the background and with a fill flash those should not be seen outdoors. Again what time of day and what your settings were has a lot to do with the way it comes out. Is this a RAW shot? If so by taking it in to post processing and changing Mid-tone and shadow settings will clean this up nicely.
It is not a bad shot and I think your learning quickly. keep trying. (this coming from a guy who refuses to use a flash unless he really needs one)

I'm sorry it took me so long to respond. It was one of those weekends.

1.} mid-afternoon in the shade. I wanted to shoot with the sun to our backs, but it was creating sunspots on the lens, even with the hood, or creating an extreme "foggy" look.

2} and 3}

4.} flash was set to p-ttl, A.Zoom, but I'm not sure about compensation

Here it is after a RAW edit, and a noise filter. I am thinking of planning a reshoot, but just not entirely sure yet. Thanks for your help!!
