Pentax-A SMC 1:1.7

Pentax-A SMC 1:1.7 f1.7-f22 sn 1258946
I found this lense in my collection from 35mm camera but have never used it.
Can anyone tell me anything regarding this lense? Thanks.

You mean Pentax-A 50mm f/1.7?

If so, that is an excellent lens!!! Some say it is even better than A50/1.4: reportedly sharper at f/1.7 to f/2.8. I owned M50/1.7 which is optically identical to A50/1.7 but used it only with ME, MX and K1000 with excellent results.

Right 1.7. What does the A mean? Lense acronyms are new to me. Also how would this lense work with a K10D? Full manual? Automatic?

Manual focusing. As long as you have the aperture ring set to the "A" position it works just as your kit lens (but manual focusing and everything lese is better... )

It is great for low light pictures. An with a K10 or K100 will work nicely.

"A" position means "auto aperture": once in "A" mode lens signals the camera to take over aperture control. If you look carefully at the lens mount you will notice a small pin that extends when you move lens into "A" position, signaling the camera to read binary encoded aperture range (notice gray dots near the pin -- for f/1.7 to f/22 range there should be only one) so P, Av and Tv modes could work.

For more details on Pentax KA mount see Bojidar's KMP site:

Great lens! I honestly don't use it much since I got my FA 50mm f/1.4 (which is autofocus and a bit faster), but the optics of the f/1.7 were excellent!

NO it will not work, I think you take down my info and ship it out to me right away... lol... I'm trying to get one on ebay, but always get outbidded...

Might just go with the 1:2 50mm and see how that one works.

Clarence,
Get the K100 or K10, put that old piece of junk f1.7 on it and shoot a couple of those close ups you like to do of horses.
Leave some background in it and fire away at F1.7. Don't even bother getting the kit lens just use the 1.7.
Regards,
Ken

Thanks for all the help.
I will put that one to use Ken, and K10 is where it will go.
Need to mess with that shaggy paint of ours soon and see what I can get.
The contrast of dark and white (well he was white until the last snow melt) should put it to the test.
Faster shots with good bokeh too.
Appreciate all the inputs.
