set of used FA43 77 vs. new DA40 70

Dear Forum Members,

I Got offered two FA silver FA primes (43 and 77) in used but perfect state.

as an alternative, my local vendor got his hands on two new silver DA40 and DA70.
price difference would be approx 100EUR more for the brandnew DAs.

how would you decide??
going for the more legendary (??) but used FAs or the brandnew DAs?

thanks for any input!!

Go for the FA LTD'S, and that 100EUR saved can be put aside to go towards getting the 31 LTD later on

The DA 40 and 70 is very small and light, fast AF and quickshift. Slower aperture though.

The FA 43 and 77 are a tad bigger and heavier than the DA's, litle slower to AF and no quickshift. But they are faster! And the give very nice bokeh and subject isolation. Thats where the biggest difference is.

Imo the DA's got a modern digital feel and look to them. The FA's got the kinda old look with more character to them. "Pixiedust" they say.... i dont know about that, but they do render beautifull images.

All these lenses are very very sharp and very good!

Good luck

Personaly, i'd go for the FA's

Here is a safety point that I had when I got my 43. It was limited and always in demand. You can always sell them. In your case, it's true for both choices. I like my 43 but Quick Shift is a nice feature. YMMV so I would try them to see if you like them.

I'd go for the FA limiteds (I've used them all, and only have the 77 left, but I'm getting another 43 soon).

The FA's will hold their value better too. Try and sell the DA limiteds tomorrow and you'll get much less for them than the FA's.

[edit] --sorry, I didn't notice the DA's were silver too. Not sure how their value will hold, but they'll likely be better than the black ones. Doesn't change my answer though, I'd still go with the FA's. The DA's will only be new until you use them anyway

It's not often you will be offered the FA ltd.s for less than the DAs.

Go with the FA ltds.

Also keep in mind that the Silver DA ltds. are more expensive than the black ones. You might be able to get a better deal if you buy a black DA litd.

Maybe a good happy medium would be silver FA 43 + black DA 70...

At the moment my go-to Kit is 15mm 43mm, 77mm.

And I am really happy with them. On the K10D the 77mm was my favourite, now on the K-5 its the 43mm.

I never tried 40 and 70, but I used the DA 35 Macro quite a lot, and I still like the FAs more.

So in my opinion, go for the FAs, you won't regret it.

It's like buying a classic muscle car, vrs the newer "up to date" version...except in this case the classic is also faster.

As the others have said, go for the FAs. The DAs are nice, but one of their biggest features is that in general they are a minimum of 200 dollars cheaper for each lens. If I could get the FA limiteds for even equivalent price, I would go for them.
