Sigma 300mm f2.8?

Anybody have experience of this lens in Pentax mount? especially on the K-5/K-7.

I have a A* 300mm f2.8 with both 1.4x-L and 2x-L converters and the IQ is superb but I am wondering how the Sigma compares. I have both 1.4x and 2x Sigma converters for my 70-200mm so am thinking of maybe selling the Pentax lens and converters for the Sigma which has AF.

Thanks.

Based on what I've been reading out there, you may want to wait for the 120-300. It appears the zoom outperforms the prime in this case.

According to posts in THIS thread the 120-300mm is no longer to be made in Pentax mount.

The Sigma 300mm is at a dealer and priced so that I could virtually do a straight swap if I sold the A* 300mm privately but I would rather put up with MF if the Pentax is better IQ wise.

The sigma 120-300mm/f2.8 will come somewhere between late summer and X-mas as far as we can see in the future. So if you can wait, it is worth the wait. As of now Canikon people go first and due to Tsunami they also have to wait.

I don't think the 2x TC will be a good thing, image quality wise.

I shoot with it almost daily. I have many a decent pic with it. Actually i love my copy. But had to send it in 3 times for service. It is very good across the entire frame. Light weight and a good walk around lens. I use for wildlife. I know the 120-300 is supose to be a sharper lens but i realllly like mine.

Here is a shot of a bird. I only shoot birds? This shows how sharp it is. But i here the pentax glass is sharper? So don't trade on my account.
Also i do not like the qiality with T.C.'s on the lens. Just not sharpppp.

I have hundred's of bird photos with it.

This is what I was interested in .. how the lens performs with the matched teleconverters. I use my Pentax 300mm f2.8 mainly with the Pentax AF 1.7x TC and get pretty good shots at 500mm .. if I am not going to get that then I would rather keep what I have.

Nice pics. In those photo's it is hard to tell how sharp the lens is. Do you have any heavily cropped with the 1.7. Showing really sharp detail? And not shooting long distances? I would love to see some pics with that lens and T.C. combo with fine detail. Just playing around i shot a Sparrow yesterday with the Sig 300mm with the 1.4 and the 2.0 t.c. Both are 66% crops. Both would stand up to 100% easily. But still it is not something I like in Photography. Without T.C.'s the image is always much better for me. Also the Sigma is not it's sharpest at 2.8. It is at f3.5-5.6 where it really get's as good as it gets.. Also my copy is a pain in the ass. AF is a hit or miss. I am not sure if it is the lens or the AF on the Pentax camera?
In my opinion.. I am thinking the the canon 300mm f2.8 and 500mm f4L lenses for super AF images.

First-66% crop 1.4 T.C. 420mm f5.6 Detail ok. But not something i like.
Second 66% crop 2.0 T.C. 600mm f8 Detail is very bad.
