DA*60-250mm/f4 test

This saturday I went out with my newly purchased lens to test it. I was on my way to the Karpendonkse Plas in Eindhoven, since there are plenty of birds, but then I thought that maybe there still would be a game at Hockeyclub HTC.

Some people know that I do take a lot off pictures, but I never visited HTC before. I descided to give the lens a good test, so from 60 to 250mm and from f4 to f11 with AF-S and AF-C. There where people looking strange to me since there was this almost constant machinegun sound coming out of my K-5. I only brought my black K-5 with this lens and a monopod. All pictures are taken in JPG because I didn't want to wait for my camera to process all RAW images. The downside is less controll over picture quality and adjusting, but that was not the main goal for this time.

The game was the team MA1 and the endscore was 1-1.

A few portraits with the lens. I have more convenient lenses for this purpose, but I think it should be possible:
250mm f4.0 close-up

140mm f5.6

250mm f4.0 from some distance

I just looked into the 250mm/f4.0 and made a new version:
https://dl.dropbox.com/u/20195454/_K5E7438G.jpg
that aint so bad after all!

Before the beginning of the game the field was sprinkled, they play on a half drey field if I'm correct:
250mm f4.0 and easy to focus

The game with AF-S:
250mm f4.0

250mm f5.6

80mm f4.0

140mm f5.0

The game with AF-C and Auto selection 5 AF-punten (centre AF-point also used but not in this selection):
250mm f4.0

I just looked into the 250mm/f4.0 and made a new version with some polishing:
https://dl.dropbox.com/u/20195454/_K5E7696G.jpg
that aint so bad after all!

250mm f5.6

250mm f5.6

250mm f7.1

250mm f9.0

250mm f7.1

For if you want to view a bigger picture of the last one:

250mm f10.0 off the field injured

I have to say that this is a fantastic lens. Only downside is that it should be more sharp at f4.0 from 200-250mm, due it is usable but the jump in sharpness at 220-250mm from f4 to f5.6 is big. You should be using this lens with open diafragma at the long end. Focussing is very good, not blazingly fast, but the DOF at 250mm and f4-f5.6 is very narrow so misfocussing can happen very easily.

To say it short, This is an amazing lens, but then again at the time in The Netherlands it is costing 1249 euro and $1500 in USA.

And I see that this is my 1000th posting so that is a nice marking on my presence here

thanks for sharing,
the one i wanna be own for a long time, i hope someday

70-200 vs 60-250, which one do you prefer?
any comments welcome.

my mind go on 60-250.
lighter, sharper(?), and more usefull range, disavantages; price and aperture.
what do you think?

Very nice shots Looking forward to getting out and using mine more this summer...

The 60-250 is one of my favorite lenses. I sold back in February in order to fund an FA*80-200 when curiosity got the better of me. The FA* was great optically, but actually weighs almost a pounds (400g) more. I ended up deciding to go back to the DA*60-250, so I sold the FA* and re-purchased the DA*. In the end, the smaller size, better range, weather seals and cheaper price won me over

I have had my 60-250mm for just over 2 years and it would probably be one of the last (if not the last) lens I would sell if I had to.

Nice shots, and it seems that the 60-250 is a fine lens indeed! As you have said, shame it's so expensive!

Agreed. My only complaint with the lens is the sharpness in this range wide open. When I compared it against my (recently sold to @jurysi ) FA* 300/4.5, I was a little underwhelmed at the long end wide open.

It's still perfectly usable, but it's much better stopped down a bit.

Why does Pentax not come out with a DA* 80-200 f2.8?

Well as you can see in the bigger file https://dl.dropbox.com/u/20195454/_K5E7884G.jpg there is still some detail in it. But it does tend to get creamy and loosing detail. I have no idea wheater this is the lens or the sensor performance.

The pictures is taken with 250mm/f7.1 iso500 1/3200th and just some lightcorrection not to overblow the highlights of -0,7EV.

So there is still some image improvement on the sensor if I had made this at iso160 (base-iso with dynamic range ON) having more Dynamic Range, Tonal Range and Color Sensitivity.

When I look at K-7 then this is still stellar image quality that was not possible before.

Now I'm lusting after another lens I hadn't thought of

Thanks Ron, great shots and a nice write up. I was figuring on the DA 300mm as my long lens but after this post I'll have to consider the 60-250 also. Maybe I'll hit the lotto and be able to get both!

Maybe we dont need 2.8 after all, with high iso capability.

Beautiful photos of a very talented daughter, Ron. Congratulations on your new lens.

Yesterday I was at the Dutch Golf championship for amateurs. For this 250mm is on the short side due to the demanded silence on the court. A little distance would give you some more room to work.

Colours are not right at the time, I will look at that tomorrow.
