Tokina 16-28...is it a pentax ??

Im looking at a tokina 16-28 lens..does anyone know if the sdm listed as its drive motor is the same as the pentax sdm...or is it indeed a re-badged pentax lens ?

Pentax doesn't sell a 16-28.

The "DC Motor" is most likley the same part as Pentax uses in the 18-135.

Pentax doesn't have a FF camera, so it doesn't make sense to sell this lens in K mount. It has too much extra glass to justify on APS-C.

The DA*55, 200, 300, and DFA 100WR all cover a full frame image circle, but they still make sense to release on APS-C because there are no reasonable alternatives without requiring retooling or redesign.

On the other hand, Pentax sells a 16-50/2.8 that covers this range for APS-C.

Those DA* and D FA were designed specifically for use on aps-c.

Plus, they still produce the FA 50/1.4, FA 43 ltd, FA 77 ltd. They have also made a batch of FA 35/2 and FA 20-35/4 recently.

Regardless, the closed thing Pentax has ever had in that focal range was the F 17-28 fisheye. I doubt Pentax would let Tokina scoop them on the release of such a lens.

I would also guess the tokina has the new sdm motor, they seem to have a very close relationship sharing lens designs so why not the focus motor too? The 16-28mm has the WR coating and a rear gasket too. It feels very well made and the IQ is outstanding on my 1.3x crop canon. Most Tokina lenses were aps-c also until this one, maybe Pentax is working on something bigger too?

The lens seems to be a plastic and metal combination, at least the part that sticks out to protect the front is plastic.

That looks pretty massive, certainly a lot bigger than the Pentax F 17-28/3.5~4.5 that I have. What's the maximum aperture for the Tokina?

Thanks,
