IMHO, best reason to buy the 20-35 is to use it on film. If you want a crop lens to replace your kit, there are a plethora of options that will run you the same as the 20-35, but will have a much longer zoom range (eg, 17-50, 17-35, etc.)

Check out the Tamron 17-50. It's an f2.8 lens, wider than the kit, and damn sharp.
