Tokina 400mm f6.3 lens (M42 mount)

Went to the park today and snapped a few pics with this lens. I didn't use a tripod so it moved around a lot even when I tried to hold it steady lol. Was kinda low light at f8 and ended up with shutter speeds of 320 to 640 or so. I imagine if I was gonna hold it by hand it would have to be at least 1/1000. I need a good strong tripod for this to take with me. Hoping I can get some sharper images with it.

NOTE: all four of these images are crops to some degree.

Would a cropped image from Pentax 55-300 DA look better than the image from this Tokina 400mm?

That is a really subjective question that probably depends on a lot of factors. I would think that the loss of resolution in the cropped image would be less desireable.
