This is what I've been getting at with all the people handing out that same advice. That advice comes from an era when you could swap film and take the SAME IMAGE with the SAME LENS on two different bodies; all that was different were ergonomics, durability, and features. Now the film is built in. That, I think, changes the equation.
That is pretty much what I was saying. You are buying your "film" for the life of the camera. That changes the balance in value between body and lens.

Why not start a new poll without identifying the lenses?

I'm doing that for another set of lenses, hopefully this weekend.

I think it's interesting that they trade the lead @5.6, where they are nearly identical in MTF.
That depends. For most of the photography I do, acuity across the complete image is important, so the FA35 leads at every aperture.

I'm partial to my FA35 f2, but if I won the lottery, I'd have both. I love the LTD fit and finish, but the sharpness of the FA35 woo'd me. Still interesting (to me, anyway) that their MTF curves cross that way.

The lighting is slightly different. The roses in the FA 31 shots are more back-lit, creating more contrast and making the orange in the bloom brigher.
Overall the FA 31 shots have slightly higher contrast and perhaps also warmer colors. Both lenses have similar bokeh.
I find the shots from the 31 more pleasing to the eye, although much of this is due to lighting.

Lighting was the same. All the shots were taken within half an hour of each other. I also do not recall any passing clouds that might have changed the lighting conditions.

It's the exposure that's different. The FA35 (according to EXIF) was at 1/200th, while the FA31 was at 1/250th, about 25% difference (or 20%, depending on which way you figure it).

I set the Aperture, the body decided the exposure. Perhaps the FA31 is a brighter lens. in any case here the FA31 got less light than the FA35. So, it can't be said that the FA31 roses got more backlight, if anything, they got less.

No, but as was mentioned, slight overexposure can reduce apparent contrast. We discussed this early in the thread, I think.

Obviously, it's not obvious to everyone. I love my FA35.
