That 5.8 max aperture on the long end is a large part of the reason for that.
Actually no. I compared carefully manually focused photos. I'd really like to have a TC that works with the lens.

Actually, yes because any TC is going to reduce the amount of light getting to the sensor and focusing screen. That's why I haven't even bother with a Pentax 2x convertor for my A 400mm/5.6 lens. It would be a 11.2 max aperture lens. The optics of both are quite good. Plus, the DA 55-300mm isn't the greatest lens to by manually focusing on a routine basis.

Putting a TC on the back of a f5.8 lens isn't a good idea. In this case the most effective solution to get more reach, one that also happens to be free, is just to crop.

The 55-300 is a really nice lens, and actually fairly fast for a variable aperture consumer zoom. You should be able to pick up the DA-L version for ~$200, and then you'd have it for whenever you need it... just throwing that out there.
Thanks again!
Got the lens tonight. Still working on getting the right focus fine adjustment for the lens, but I think it will work out good for Sunday and future long-reach lens when I need one. Couldn't beat the price!
