Recommendations for wide angle zoom

I'm looking for recommendations for my K100d. I have a 28mm and the 18-55mm kit lens, but I'd like to get something wider than the 28mm. I bid on a Pentax 17-28mm SMC-F f3.5 and lost. I would be okay with a prime around 12-18mm, but a zoom would be even better.

I understand this lens would work with my K100d, and I suspect it would only work in manual focus? I am still trying to understand exactly which lenses will "work" with my camera, and what limitations I face with them. I don't mind manually focusing, but I'd prefer to have the option of AE when I want it.

Try DA 16-45, DA 14, then of course you have Sigma 10-20 and 17-70 ....
btw: the 18-55 kit lens, is very useful wide angle lens IMHO...

All the F-series lenses are autofocus, so it should work like a champ.

The 17-28 is a zoom fisheye, not rectilinear. Film equivalent of the 10-17.

FA and F series lenses are autofocus and auto aperture, so they have AE.

A series lenses are auto aperture but manual focus, so they will have AE.

M and K series lenses are all manual so it's manual focus and manual exposure.

Hi Papersniper

Re your statement: "I would be okay with a prime around 12-18mm, but a zoom would be even better".
I notice you haven't mentioned what budget you've set aside, but if there is a reasonable sum available to spend I can thoroughly second one of axl's recommendations, in the form of Sigma's astonishing 10-20mm wide-zoom HSM lens. Unless you can resist serious temptation and leave your credit-card at *home, one look through the viewfinder will be sufficient to convince you about what this lens can do. I'd be quite surprised if the Sigma doesn't make a serious *dent in you bank balance otherwise, so take heed.....this warning is final........resistance is futile etc !

Best regards
Richard

Yup, hands down the best bang for buck UWA for any mount. I cant get enough of it on my 20D and i know other people the same.

Just one thing, its not a HSM lens for pentax. Still relies on the screwdriver AF system.

Hi -spam-

Re your observation: "Its not a HSM lens for pentax"

Oops.....'mea culpa' and all that......naturally my oversight and so I stand corrected !

Best regards

The 12-24 is nice. The 10-17 fisheye is nice too, at 1/2 the price. Some people don't like the distortion, though.

Sigma 10-20 is something like half price of DA 12-24 (at least here in UK), then of course, you have Sigma 12-24, which is somewhere in between, pricewise...

I've got a Cosina MF 19-35 on my auction watchlist. NIB stock clearance item with an opening bid of about $70 or so. I googled around for some sample images from it and I have to say I'd be tempted to buy it if I didn't know in my heart that I practically never shoot wide angle and have zero need/use for it. There may be some on eBay, could be worth looking into.
