DA* 16-50 or DA 17-70 with AFG-540 Flash?

Looking to replace my kit zoom .. which would make more sense?

Thanks

I use the 16-50 with perfectly acceptable results.

DA* 16-50mm. I've used it and it does great.

I got the impression from the title of the thread that the options were the (DA*16-50) or the (DA17-70 and AF-540 flash). Not sure if that changes anyone's answer, but depending on how useful a flash would be to the OP, it might.

I would say that the 16-50 does not necessarily replace a flash. Whatever lens you choose, you will still benefit from flash. You can probably find a 16-50 used for a reasonable price and still be able to afford the flash. If not, the 17-70 is a fine lens and a little smaller to boot.

If you have the option to get DA*16-50 or DA17-70+AF540 for about the same price, then definitely the 17-70 with the flash. That combination will give you more options, plus less headaches of having to deal with SDM failures which are inevitable with the DA*.

I have a flash and also the DA*16-50. Personally, pound for pound I think the flash is more valuable. The flash makes almost ALL of my lenses better, the 16-50 is only more useful in some situations. But it depends on what you're doing.

I like the Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 + Flash for the same cost idea.

The DA 17-70mm/4 is an SDM lens also. In fact, it is SDM only. I never had any problems out of it.

Greg.
The problem with Tammy is, what if i get a copy that has back/front focusing problem.
I am in Pakistan and can't afford to take risk.

The Pentax Lenses make more sense to me.

I am personally leaning towards the 17-70 and flash combo.

Good idea. I regret selling my 17-70, I was much more happy with that lens than with 16-50.

Extra 20mm comes in very handy

Extra 20mm comes in very handy. F2.8 also isn't that much faster in dim light. In lower light you really require F2 or faster or use of flash.
