Sigma 50 1.4 or Tamron 28-75 2.8?

For portraits? I know the extra zoom and crop advantage but I also know a person that started out with a 50mm 1.4 (nikon) and took a lot of amazing pictures with it. I'm a little afraid of the quality control issues of the sigma but it seems to be the sharper lens. Portraits is what I want but no necessarily head shots. Hey, can't I foot zoom anyway?

Which one would you get?

The Tamron is renown as a superb portrait lense. Done deal.

Don't forget that 'foot zooming' changes perspective - sometimes desirable and at others not.

I'd get the sigma. It's got better low light capabilities, and probably sharper too.

Not usually desirable for portraits - but the Tamron is really sharp.

OP - go to the Tamron thread here on PF, you'll see lots of stunning shots from that lense.
