Is the field of view for the DA40mm the same as the'M' version

I just wondered... I have the M-40mm f2.8 on my MEsuper and its a 'fairly wide field of view (I like it) but when it's on my K-x it's considerably narrower so I tend to use the FA50 1.4 instead as it's simply just a better lens...

Obviously he DA-40mm as a limited lens has a better optical formula but do they have the same field of view when mounted on a modern pentax dslr?

M-40 2.8... built originally for film... As is the FA-50mm

DA-40mm Limited... built for cropped sensor dslr...

Surely the field of view is wider on a lens designed for cropped sensor than that designed for full-frame or film...

Cheers
Dave

Nope, 40 is 40. So with the 1.5x crop, it's more like a 60mm fov on a Pentax dslr.

both 40s will look the same on DSLR, which is the point. 40 is 40.

The DA 40mm ltd will work on autofocus bodies with in body aperture control. The DA and M will have the same fov on a film body and the same fov on a dSLR. It is the sensor that is changing the fov, not the lens.

That made sense... Cheers Blue :-)
I shall make sure to play with the 'M' version' before I make any LBA decisions...

The M is a pretty good lens. Has some ugly PF sometimes, but otherwise it is very sharp wide open and produces some interesting colors.

Just an update... Been playing a little with the M-40-f2.8 on the K-x... Not had great results to be honest... And keep switchin back to the FA50... As such I'm finding the 'narrowness' of the fifty less and less of an issue the more I use it...
Still want an AF-prime thats considerably wider than 50mm but its going to have to wait a while... Although heavy the Tamron 17-50-2.8 does (admirably! just the size and weight!!) the job for now...
Cheers all
Dave
