Takumar 135 2.5 Bayonet

I got this lens for free but I notice it has threads on the exterior of the front of the lens. This had no lens cap and I don't know whether I am supposed to get something that goes on the threads or what? It has its own built in lens hood already. So what do I do for a cap etc.

I think they're just grip things to make it easier to pull the hood out. The hood is not really stable enough to screw something on to. Also they strengthen the hood. A lot of the hoods I've seen are dented or not round any more, because it's thin material.

The cap size is 52mm. If you get a cap with protruding "ears" like the one on the bottom right:

it'll keep the hood from sliding out when the lens is capped. Or get in your way when you want to slide the hood out.

If I understand correctly you have threads on the outside end of the lens?If so someone has a reverser screwed in which can be removed just like taking a filter off.

I have a Takumar (Bayonet) serial 5428131 that has a knurled grip on the end of the hood. That lens has "Japan"

Another, Serial 5655472 is "Made in Taiwan".
That lens has what looks like a thread, but close inspection shows it is just a set of parallel rings.
I think it is "half" of the knurl, maybe the tool that put the longitudinal hashes on, went out
of service on later Taiwan lenses.

These are nice, easy focus lenses for "distant" portraits.
