my vote goes with the 24 2.0 , rework the old FA24 add new coating at the rear, and release as a DFA24 2.0, a little larger than I'd like ideally but still no heavier than the Sigma 24 1.8 and a fair bit smaller than the sigma which is a bit of a monster...
Sigma says it's "Extremely compact within the category of super fast wide angle lenses".

LOL

FA*24 2.0 - 405gr 6.55cm long
Sigma 24 1.8 - 485 gr (20% heavier) 8.25cm Long (about 30% longer)

Yep extremely compact - maybe for a sigma not for a pentax home of the limited lenses

I love the 28mm FL and wish they made a ltd (that isnt $1K, like the 31)

I ended up buying the F28 and am super pleased. Fantastic lens, they pop up for sale once and awhile if you keep your eyes open $200-300. Some discussion on whether it is better than the FA28. I seem to see a consensus here that the F28 is a bit better than FA but a lot of that is subjective and depends on how you shoot (wide open or stopped down, etc etc)

I looked at a test for the Sigma28 and that is a lens that I wouldn't buy. Not so big IQ wide-open. Why buy a f1.8 lens if you have to use it at f2.8 or even better f4 for good IQ.

Sigma Lens: Primes - Sigma 28mm f/1.8 EX DG Aspherical Macro (Tested) - SLRgear.com!
and if you are going to buy something that big and heavy in the FL why not just get the 30 1.4

I am a huge fan of my Sigma autofocus 24mm f/2.8 super-wide II. Size/weight about the same as FA 50 f/1.4. I love the focal length (sits perfectly between my DA 15 and FA 35) and the speed is fast enough for most purposes, especially given the compact size of the lens!

The Sigma Super Wide II 24/2.8 was a gem that beats any Pentax 24mm. Pity it was poor on flare control and built quality. Mine was the manual focus and I remember the drop in image quality when switched to the FA*24. It was that good.

sorry, you might had misunderstood me with that statement. what I meant by that are the old existing Pentax AF 28mm lens are underwhelming performance-wise. I didn't mean the 28mm as a focal length.
My experiences has proven completely contrary to this statement. My F 28mm has been an astounding lens that soon became a favorite of mine. Underwhelming? Not a chance.

because it is better than the Pentax at 1.8 and slightly better than Pentax on the same apertures.

because the OP is looking for a 28mm, not a 30mm.

I'm sorry to hear you had bad copy of FA*24.
I used to own Sigma 24/2.8 mini wide II AF, and K24/2.8 and now FA*24. And no way Sigma was better than any of those two Pentax lenses. It might be tad sharper at f2.8 but the contrast, colours and flare resistance (or lack of it) were pretty horrid IMO. It's not a bad lens, especially for the size of it but nothing much to write home about IMO...

Don't think I have a bad copy. In fact I have owned 2 FA*24/2 bought brand new, and they were identical in optical performance. They were also the few Pentax lenses that I have bought new are completely trouble free. Back then I was shooting colour negatives and slides only, and the Sigma produced significantly better sharpness and micro contrast. If not for the really poor built quality, I might still have it. The rubber and contact pin were worn down like butter. Just amazing how far Sigma was trying to cut cost.

Another vote for the 28

I would buy a DA28 2.4 in an instant. I own an M28 2.8 that I love for its compact size and IQ, but would prefer auto-focus. The FA31 is too expensive for most of us, yet Pentax would not have to worry about cannibalizing sales of this lens by offering a DA28 (as opposed to a DA30, at least). With all the 28s Pentax has manufactured in the past, I am sure it would be easy for them to introduce a DA28 at a reasonable price.

But is the budget priced DA L35 2.4 lens a one off, or will pentax make other cheaper primes?
My guess: if people buy it, we will see more lenses like that.
