advice on a replacement for 50-200wr

Hi my tripod blew over and the camera with a 50-200wr fitted landed head down on the lens and the zoom stopped working.
Any way had it looked at and its been declared not economic to repair due to rails damaged and internal body cracked.
I liked this lens for lots of reasons, nice range, nice size, nice weight and I preferred it to my 55 300da for every day use.
However before I buy another I thought i would ask what other lenses in a similar zoom range [any brand] other Pentax users might recommend I look at?
The only thing I would like to gain would be a faster lens within that sort of 50 /55 to 200 range if that is possible.
regards
Alistair

Don't know what your price range is but, I'd suggest that you look at one of the fast 70-200 f2.8 zooms from Sigma or Tamron. They aren't wr and weigh a lot more but they are faster and deliver better IQ. I liked my DA 50-200 but sold it off as I felt that the DA 55-300 made it redundant. I kind of miss it in some ways.

Honestly, in reading your post, I think you'd be best served by just getting another one.

To be honest, I find it mildly shocking that you would prefer the 50-200 to the 55-300. WR is the only advantage it would have (well, it is slightly smaller). To each their own, I guess.

Anyway, as blackcloudbrew suggested, getting another 50-200 is probably your only option. Sigma makes a competitor that is very well-featured for only $160, but I doubt if the performance is as good, though I have no experience with it, and it definitely isn't WR.

yes looking at the alternate brand offerings I think I will look for another 50-200wr.
both of you obviously think the 55-300 is a better lens?
I have [had ] the 50-200wr and still have a 55-300 DAL [not DA as I originaly posted,] and had the impression that the 50-200 was a better lens Iq wise and certainly lighter and a bit smaller but Iam I missing something, all the reports I read said the Da and DAL iq was the same, just a plastic mount and no lens hood with a DAL.

Most people view the 55-300mm as the better lens, IQ wise. That said, especially with consumer lenses, there is a lot of sample variation and you could have gotten a good 50-200mm and/or a bad 55-300mm.

I have been offerd a SMC Pentax-DA 18-250mm F3.5-6.3 ED AL [IF]at a resonable price is that worth getting? I used the 50-200 for people photos reportage type stuff so centre sharpness is the main thing not so much the edges?

In addition to the differences you mentioned (Plastic mount and no hood), DA-L does not have quick-shift. Optically, to my knowledge, they are identical. There was a thread recently discussing the DA-L 55-300 capabilities..here:https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/pentax-slr-lens-discussion/144806-dal-55-...-acrollet.html

This is an excellent lens and worth getting, IMHO. I mostly use it as general walk around lens haven't been disappointed. It is a little slow in focusing indoors/very low light.

Reviews are virtually unanimous tha the 55-300 is the better lens. But I personally don't see anything in the reviews or the samples to suggest it is *much* better (unless you count the photozone review of an obviously defective 50-200), and I too like the size and weight advantage of the 50-200 enough to consider upgrading mine to a WR version, whereas I really have no interest in the admittedly slightly superior 55-300.

I own the Tamron version of the 18-250 as the Pentax version is really just a rebranded version of the Tamron lens. I have read (some time ago) that some feel the Pentax version is not as good as the Tamron one), don't know but it's something to keep in mind. Regardless. I don't think I've seen a comparison between the 18-250 and either the DA 50-200 or 55-300 lenses. For one they are for different purposes. The 18-250 is a 'travel' lens and tries to be a one lens for all situations. It vignettes at 18mm a bit, tends to have lens creep, has no quick shift focus ring, and is slow on the focus (but not annoyingly so IMHO). I've used mine quite a number of times and honestly much more than the DA 55-300. My personal, practical opinion of the 18-250 is that it's a good thing to have in my bag and gives good results. However, more specialized lenses will give better results.
