You are the first to request powerzoom! That is an interesting concept, but also one of the things that break down on older lenses. The sysytem does work very well.
It's a remarkable feature on my 250-600, mostly because it maintains the focus as you zoom through the range. I wish the Pz on my 80-200/2.8 worked now.

I guess I respectfully disagree with your bottom line in some respects:

a) I see a 135-270 f/2.8 costing as much as a 300 f/2.8 prime, and less desireable with the 60-250 f/.4 already in the lineup.
b) I don't see an f/5.6 anything good with a TC because absent strong sunlight it doesn't work.
Well Pentax never made real fast zooms. 80-200/f2.8 was fast, then there is 60-250 wich is f4. Your mentioned FA*250-600mm/f5.6 isn't that fast when you look at it. The difference between 500mm and 600mm is also in cropping to overcome. Yes a 400mm/f4 would be great, but currently I don't see to many users for such a big and expensive lens. Maybe in the future.

The main difference between a f4 and a f2.8 lens is the use for it wide-open when you either want to isolate your subject or when you don't have a lot of light to work with and don't want to go up in shuttertime or put in a higher iso-number. I did some sports rescently and working with iso-5000 is more then enough for me. When you want to do sports in daytime outdoors then the 60-250mm is more then capable for the task. So they do serve a different market.

Well from a startpoint of saving money on development it probably will be from old design, so FF compatable.

Did you gave my idea DA*135-270mm/f2.8 a thought? This is combined with a 2x converter your replacement for the big 250-600.
I wonder if they could combine the signals through the PZ/SDM contacts to support both SDM-II and powerzoom at the same time. That'd be something not offered by others. Along the same line of thinking, how about Silent drive motor (for wildlife), high speed AF motor (for sports), and power zoom all in one lens? You could select whether you wanted HSM or SDM in the camera.

They could also make the motors user serviceable for DIYers.

DA 135/270 f2.8 would be great if they actually made a 2x TC.

PZ still works great on my 28-105 and 28-80. I use PZ on the 28-105 a lot with rechargeable batteries. I imagine it'd be even better on the super telezoom!

Surely one of the easiest items to develop would be a set of auto extension tubes!

I would have voted for the long sealed macro (if I hadn't finally obtained an A*200 f4 this year) as it would be such a unique offering in the current market.

I love the power zoom function on my FA*28-70, every zoom should have it. My choices are DA*24 f/2 WR (we are crying out for a nice prime in this range, DA21 does not cut it), DA*135 f/2 would fit in very nicely as well. The 200 Macro WR could be used as a Halo lens, a refresh of the FA*28-70 (keeping PZ of course) and I would buy it tomorrow. My last choice would be the TC1.4 with SDM hopefully with support for the standard AF motor as well.

I had not seen this survey previously, I just saw it referenced in the thread about Adam getting an interview in Japan. It is a good idea and hopefully catches someones attention at Pentax. I must say I am somewhat disappointed in the poor showing of the DA-L lenses? I can't wait to get one of the new 50's they just announced.
I guess we have many well heeled users on this forum!

Time flies when your having fun as they say. Is there any need for updating this survey? If so, and a lot of new members came along on this forum then when numbers of entry's are growing towards 600 I will update it going towards PhotoKina.

First results presented in october with 450 poll entry's.

If the sdm issues aren't conclusively and decisively addressed and possibly including a 3 year warranty I fail to see an sdm much less DA* lenses selling well. Now that Pentax has increased the market share, they can not afford a repeat of the DA* 16-50mm fiasco and sdm issues that are still rearing their ugly head.
Any reason (besides pride) that they couldn't just throw SDM in the bin and give all newly-manufactured DA* lenses the new DC motors? There are some issues with reliability on specific Canon L lenses (was it the 24-105 that rental places won't stock any more because of USM failures?), but having the entire DA* professional line discredited isn't compatible with Pentax wanting to grow its market share.

comparing your original thread to the latest pentax announcements, they are working with a different market research team.

Is that so? I see on the lens roadmap things that are wanted by the group:
- 560mm/f5.6 would be the lens in the middle of 500mm/f5.6 and 600mm/f5.6
- 15-85mm would be an update for 16-50mm wich was requested.
- The travelzoom not on my list but requested.
- wide zoom could be an update (WR) for 12-24mm
- zoom limited, very new to everyone I guess (24-36mm?) (all metal?)
- DA telezoom, this could be the wanted consumerzoom
- the much requested 1.4x TC is on it.

And then there are still some requests to fill.

When I started this survey overhere I did think about the group that was to be considdered active. I made the bar at minimum of 50 posts on the forum. At that time there where 3000 members above that bar and by the time PhotoKina is there will be over 4000 members that active on this forum. And probably still some demand for SDM-II | 24mm/f2.0 | 85mm/f1.4 | 135mm/f2.0 | long macro | fast telezoom.

Since the roadmap appeared,
we've been expecting a rework of the SMC Pentax-FA 20-35mm F4 AL,
much like the DA 40 Ltd was a rework of the M40/2.8.

It seems like Pentax actually DOES seem to listen then!

About that DFA 50mm/f1.0... Is that even possible with K-mount?

No idea, but a suggested DM 50mm/f1.2 would also do the trick.

I voted SDM II, the AF motoring on these DA*'s are absolutely terrible, very slow to focus and breaks down.
