Yes, all non-APO lenses have this issue, but some are better than others. None of the lenses I listed as being better (Nokton, Planar, Samyang) are APO designs.

He is using the K-5 so using the stock screen may not be a problem.
??
Didn't know K-5 stock screen is that much different from K-7... And to focus f1.2 on that screen was a b*!?h, at least for my anyway...

Nice test. The differences between them are too small for me to really see, although I think the DA * lens is sharper/more contrasty at f1.4. By f4, you'd be hard put to tell the difference between them.

It was just a suggestion. However, I do know that the stock screen in my *istD is a damn site easier to focus than the stock screens were in the K200d and K20d. However, the Pentax macro screen was easier than the stock screen as well. Some situations the split is a hindrance and closeup work is one of them. There also seemed to be differences in the K20d and earlier K10d.

I never thought of focus shift (see?? I told you it wasn't a scientific test!).
that's alright. I expected that on your initial statement. I just added up some info and differences at those apertures. it might help up the others what to expect while shooting between f1.2 and f1.4. personally, if they want something to a really significantly sharp and focused image, they should shoot at f1.4. f1.2 could be a lot of work.

The thing is, when the focus gets nailed at f1.2 in blue light or golden light, it is a keeper. Sure, the number of keepers is lower. However, it is like a deep throwing q.b. in football. The short 10 yard passes in the flats and screens are higher percentage than a 70 yard side line fade, but oh my when they hit that bomb, the place erupts!

so I finally got chance to see the shots on PC.
To my eyes, the DA* is better in all f stops but f1.4. And at that f stop it seems shaper but the OOF on the case for the glasses ruins it. This is the only niggle I have with DA*55... this lens seems to create circles out of thin air....

Thanks for the shootout.

The A lens is clearly the better lens at equal distances from a close subject. It has a much smoother bokeh at all focal lengths whereas the 55 is quite distracting in most of the shots i have seen. The Texture on the chair is nicely resolved by the 50 @ F22 whereas the 55 is still quite soft. There's always going to be extra separation in the longer focal length lens though due to more shallow depth of field.
