Bob, from what can be seen in a web image, that's a very respectable shot for the conditions. I've got to try some cavern shots come springtime!

I'm assuming you used the SR – isn't that a sweet feature? You might want to try adding a monopod to your setup for such dark conditions. Together with the SR, and using noise reduction, you might get away with ISO 800 and a 1/4 second exposure. If a tripod is permitted, you can go even slower on your shutter speeds (no SR, though!) while dropping the ISO further. Just be sure to use noise reduction with those slow speeds!

this is where a fast prime comes in.

you could gain 1 stop with a fast f2.8 zoom or 2 stops with a really good prime. but at a cost $$$$$.

2 stops is 4X shutter, or 400 iso in place of 1600 for better quality,

BUT you shot is pretty good
