Pentax FA 50mm f1.7

Hi. Does anyone know how much the FA 50mm f1.7 lenses are going for these days? There are none on ebay to see pricing and could not find any here currently. Thanks for any help.

This lens is overpriced.

Look for the F version. The FA is identical but it is overpriced because it is more rare.

Same story in reverse for the F 50 1.4.

That's pretty much true. The FA50/1.7 is much more rare than the F50/1.7 (as the F50/1.4 is more rare than the much more common FA50/1.4). So the better deals are the F50/1.7 and FA50/1.4 as they are more common and typically priced lower. Now, that in and of itself doesn't make the FA50/1.7 and F50/1.4 overpriced as there is some value (to some people) in owning the more rare version of each lens. However, if you just care about shooting with them (which I assume is the case for 99% of people) then it makes sense to buy the less expensive version of either lens as they certainly represent the better values.

Yes, the F50/1.7 would make much sense for the price. that version usually sells from $120-$180 on average.

I can't blame the FA50/1.7 being priced higher due to rarity. I once came close to purchasing the cheaper F version but lost out on the bid. eventually I ended up getting the rarer FA50/1.7 a few days later coz some cheapskates expected it not go above $180 3 days remaining on the bid. I jumped immediately on the $200 BIN offer in the fear that this one might slip away again. I'd say no regrets. best $200 I ever spent on a rarer FA50/1.7.

Oh yeah, I forgot to answer the OP's question in my last post.

I've sold several copies of each over the past 2 years and I'd say the average price for the FA50/1.7 in EX condition is somewhere between $240 and $260. The F50/1.7 is closer to $200-225.

wow. it seems the price of the "F" have somewhat spiked up as well. that's FA price territory so to speak. possibly the FA should command $280 then I suppose.

It probably rose from the $150-175 range to the $200-225 range over the past 2 years in part due to the release of the K-x and the increased demand by new users for a fast, somewhat cheap AF prime.

I looked at them 6 months ago and felt that the FA50/1.4 was a much better deal. With a hood it seems to me that it outperforms the 1.7 - call me a heretic. There are some good analyses of why but the bottom line is that the front element of the 1.4 is not as recessed as the 1.7 and therefore must have a hood to meet its potential. Good luck in the hunt.

Who at pentax would have thought that people would spend the same amount on the cheaper version of the 50 1.4 .

The hood helps the 50/1.4 quite a bit. It doesn't, IMO, fully outperform the 1.7 in terms of sharpness at wide apertures, but it makes it a lot closer.

Here's a link to a comparison I did a while back of the FA50/1.4 and FA50/1.7 with and without a hood.

Thanks for the link. As you said, its subjective and color and bokeh are factors too. I happen to think that the 1.4 is underrated and I therefore got mine for significantly less than folks pay for the 1.7. I use hoods religiously and so that is not a factor for me as I would have put one on either way. Great reference post though.

You're welcome. I've never really felt one was the clear winner over the other as they each have their own strengths. No question though that a hood helps out the 50/1.4 quite a bit

Personally, I think your post should be a sticky in the lens section because this question comes up about every couple of months in my brief experience here.

The 50 1.4 hood issue is such a common one, and one I just don't understand.

How could you be using a lens with no hood and expect it to perform well??? It simply boggles my mind. Photography 101!
