You mean the DA*300 + TC? If so a bigma (Sigma 50-500) is probably cheaper

I think you will find that, if buying new, the DA*300 can be a bit on the expensive side. Then adding a TC would add to that expense. And remember it is an SDM lens,so buying used could have some risks involved.

(SDM reported to be a bit unreliable in some cases.)

Anyway I have the lens and am very pleased with its capability. Up to this time I have found the length to be sufficient for me without having to add a TC.

Sample as requested.
It looks over-sharpened and cartoony.

...in any event, I really like the DA* 300 f/4, but I've never used it with a TC. A TC will degrade image quality and slow your lens down. Cropping will degrade image quality, but will not slow the lens down. Pick your poison.

Depends on how serious you are about the extra reach and it's usage...
If you want something long and cheap you can look for a SP tamron 500 mm. it's a mirror lens but has a good rep, it's been called one of the few decent IQ mirror lenses...

You can also look for a Tamron 300 f2,8 and a TC..but that will probably be much more expensive.

If you are real serious about it just save the money for a good lens (probably bank account drying one)...you'll end up buying one so just cut the middle steps.

Sigma 50-500 / 150-500 will cost less than DA* 300 + TC.

I'll sell you my Lil'Bigma 170/500 for US$650, like new, complete package.
That's because I don't use it, preferring my much lighter/smaller 500/8 mirror.

What is your budget? The Promaster 1.7x TC auto focuses the 55-300mm fine in daylight on my K-R. The IQ seems a little better to me, than cropping for the same size, but not much. The Tokina 500mm f/8 (or Sears brand) is pretty sharp far a mirror lens, but lacks contrast. The high IQ options will cost very much more, as others have said.

Due to the critique on my other photo, probably justified, which I have deleted, I will add another.
This is from the camera. Do not be mislead. The colour of the Lorikeet can be rather saturating.

The Tamron 500mm mirror lens is decent if you can increase micro-contrast in post-production, find f8 fast enough, and do not mind doughnut-shaped bokeh. It is inexpensive, light, and much easier to hand-hold than a standard long telephoto. With the Tamron 2x you get 1000mm f16.

I was not critical of the other though I felt somewhat the same way. This one is smashing! A really good capture.

hey RioRico,
after much consideration, my choice is the Sigma 50-500 or the DA*300mm.

Sigma 50-500:

Sigma Lens: Zooms - Sigma 50-500mm f/4-6.3 EX DG HSM APO (Tested) - SLRgear.com!

BTW, there are two versions of the 50-500 (OS and non-OS). AFAIK, the newer one is actually slower through most of its range.
