Sigma 10-20 or Tamron 10-24 for K7

Hello all,

I have read reviews for both of these lenses as well as comparisons between the two but was unable to find an answer to what I was curious about.

Anyhow, I am torn between the two and both get good ratings, but the Tamron has F3.5 and the sigma I can afford is F4 and I already know that the K7 has low light issues which makes me lean toward the Tamron for F3.5. The extra 4mm is nice but I have another lens that covers that range. So for me its weather there would be much difference in F4 vs F3.5 on a K7 were I to use it indoors. I imagine both would work just fine on a sunny day outside. I have seen images from both and must say that the ones from the sigma are quite impressive, however, there were less to find in the Tamron so the sigma may look better since there is more to see. The $50 rebate on the Tamron is another selling point... Also I saw a mention of the pop up flash being obscured by the size of the 77mm body and notice the sigma uses the same size filter. If I get one of these will I also need to buy a hot shoe flash... Unsure if my budget can afford that right now..

Marc

I recently purchased a Tammy 10-24 and I am quite happy with the image quality. The lens at 3.5 is a bit soft but still quite acceptable. I cannot say much about the Sigma since I never owned one, however most places I read that it has a bit better IQ.

Here is a shot @ 10mm f3.5 and a 100% crop (unedited, straight from the camera). Not my best shot but it's the only one wide open yet. Hope it helps .

I looked at both back in December and read all I could, and reviewed photos, and finally decided on the Tamron 10-24. I have been very happy with the lens. It does sharpen up a good bit a full stop up and the 10mm on it is terrific. As an addition to my 18-55 & 55-300 it was has been great. It does obscure the pop-up flash because of its size but I understand that the Sigma has the same issues.

Mine came with a $100 rebate through 1/1/11 which certainly was a nice plus as it dropped the final cost to $374 as I recall.

Get a cheap chinese manual flash (eg YN560) for cheap can use on or (later) off camera... Manual flash is pretty easy to get to grips with... PTTL sounds good but I can't say I'll ever really need it as maual flash is easy peasy...

I tried the Tamron 10-24 in a store in Leeds (whilst buying the Tamron 17-50mm 2.8 which I love) it was sharp as nails (sharp nails)
But I think given the option... I'd pass on both your proposed options and go for the DA-15mm-f4 and a solid tripod myself

I assume you've considered the DA 12-24mm F4? Discounted on price or speed?

That's what I'm planning on putting my money into... as soon as I recover from the last lens purchase.

A few months ago I considered the Tammy 10-24, the Sigma 10-20's (both generations), the Pentax 12-24... and I bought the Tammy, with the rebate sweetening the decision. I have read reports of buyers returning 3-4-5 copies of the Sigmas before getting a good copy. I've talked to pros who loathe Sigma's QC problems. The Pentax hasn't such problems -- but the price!!!

I am quite happy with my Tamron 10-24. (No, I don't take it out in pouring rain!) It has just about replaced my DA10-17 and Zenitar 16/2.8. (But I won't sell those!) In recent days I've used it for waterfalls, rainbows, building interiors (wide) and exteriors (long). The 10-24 and my DA18-250 are now always in my carry-bag, along with a few select primes. Don't leave home without it!

I've never had an issue with Sigma. I tend to gravitate to their lenses in part because they offer by far the best warranty here in Canada. What sold me on the Sigma 10-20 was page after page of outanding images in the 10-20 club. IIRC, there was a general consensus that for overall IQ the Sigma was better than the Tamron.
