I shot the Single in November challenge with my Kiron 28mm f2. It's a pretty nice lens, mine is almost as sharp as my FA 35 wide open and sharper than my Cosina 28mm at f2.8. It has a distinct blue cast, and metering is not reliable when stopped down. I prefer to meter wide open and count the stops to adjust for aperture.

Bokeh can get pretty wild at f2, but I like it:

My sample got a nice bokeh as well, eventhough soft at f2 (most definitely not as sharp as the FA35...closer to the FA31 sharpness at f1.8 with even worse corner performance and much poorer contrast)

Shot at F2 close to minimum focus distance, only exposure adjustments.

P.S:

Shot at f5.6

Both lenses cost me a total of $5 to purchase because like many kiron lenses of that vintage the apertures were totally stuck with oil

Disassembly of the lens and thorough cleaning solved that problem

The performance of these lenses is far superior to the sigma 24 and 28 mini wides in terms of control of lateral CA
Hey I very much appreciate the DIY guide you had posted on adjsuting the infinity setting, Mine reached infinity focus way before it should, and your instructions fixed it. With the infinity at the right position I can get much closer for focussing.

This is the thread on adjusting infinity focus on Kiron lenses, my copy did not have a screw on the outer barrel and just twisted out lik a bottle cap:

Real life bokeh shots and others

All shot wideopen at F2, and no sharpening added.

This taken taken in better light....I think it's not too shabby for a $125 lens.

I had one for a short while. Didn't do much with it before selling it though. It had to go to help pay for the K28 f2.0..

I've had this lens for a while and never used it. Thought I'd just take some quick shots around my neighbourhood.
Looks good!
But can you tell what this is?

John, I don't know what you are asking, are you talking about the jaggies in a 100%++ crop ?

P.S: Also, I took those initial shots in Av mode, but being shots at F2 probably didn't make much difference and also they were taken BEFORE adjusting the infinity focus...I think this last set came out better.

I think he's talking about the ghosted image next to the building. The white-ish banding.

it's not bad bokeh-wise. just wished it could had been much sharper and a bit more contrasty at slower apertures.

Actually the crop is a window and the whitish banding is the white panel inside the window.

The image is a face of a building with everything behind me, including the sunset, water, grass being reflected on the window glass. I think it's part of a bird feed or some sort of a post being reflected in this crop. It is a crop of the first image I posted in my opening post.

I agree, but there aren't too many lenses out there that can be contrasty and sharp wideopen at f2 and give a 28mm focal length. But, I think the bokeh is excellent here, it has less of a bright halo around the highlight circles than even the K 28/2 and in most instances it is buttery smooth.

I will be using my FA*28-70/2.8 for seious shots needing sharpness and contrast (That lens has bucket load of contrast) and the Tamron 17-50/2.8 for casual shots as it is freaking sharp. I think if I need a stop more of light and need that f2, then this $125 could find some use. Especially in my SLR with a true 28mm, it would be a worthy wideangle in a small package (I bought it to use with my A50/1.7 in the SLR for small two lens package...now, i just have to use up that roll thats been in there for ever )

Sharpened the above image...taken at infinity focus and almost the whole shot to show edge sharpness, straightened it by like 1 degrees so may have cropped about 5% of the image.

This is the another image posted above but sharpened/post-processed to make the basket pop as much as possible.

That was the first shot I took as I entered the park and the sun was already setting and I took all the rest after that....yeah! the frist image is a bit confusing and that's one of the reasons I liked it.

The exposures are quite different. The 5.6 photo is much darker.

I went out into the garden uesterday with my "new" Sears A 135mm and Kiron 28 f'2. Nothing special, just playing around. The Kiron is a lot sharper, still looks good at 100% crop level. Unfortunately the 135mm doesn't.

I couldn't resist comparing this to the other two zooms.

Kiron f/2 compared to Tamron 17-50/2.8 and Pentax FA* 28-70/2.8 at f2.8

Opened RAW images in LR and set the WB to Tungsten. I had to boost the Kiron exposure by +0.1 and the Pentax by +0.3 to get the histograms to look similar. In real life it is easy to notice that tamron lets in more light than the others at the same exposure setting.

TRIPOD, 2-SEC TIMER, MANUAL FOCUS USING LV.

The order of images are Kiron, Tamron, Pentax

CENTER (100% CROP)

HIGHLIGHT BOKEH AT 100%
