You mean like this Sigma beast, not available in Pentax mount, but priced in the down-payment-for-a-house range? 200-500mm F2.8 APO EX DG - Telephoto Zoom Lenses - SigmaPhoto.com
I was going to get one of those, but it's only available in Nikon, Canon and Sigma fit
For not much extra money (in relative terms) you can just buy the optional electronic rear lens cap, ..... a 550D or D90.
That thing seriously is rediculous, no way could you sneak up on anything carrying that. They could hear you grunting and groaning and if you slipped and dropped it, you'd cr%p your pants and they'd smell that for sure. Focus and zoom motor are powered by a single cylinder diesel generator set if I recall correctly.

A question that is running in my mind. Who are those wildlife photographers using Pentax gear and what are you using? Are there any new lenses that you would want or need? Is DFA*500mm/f5.6 enough for future?
I think that Pentax should strongly consider bringing back the 250-600/5.6 in a dfa* capacity and make it special order.

The lens is amazing wide open, and 5.6 is perhaps even ideal on a k-5. It fills the super telephoto arena nicely, and for most wouldn't even require a teleconverter. Its as sharp as a bag of primes but gives you zoom flexibility. What's not to love, well other than the price...

Not to mention that with the 16-50 and 60-250 you'd have almost everything covered.

I also think it would attract some shooters back to the brand since there isn't anything that can be easily acquired @ 600mm.

Just my 2c.

I do nearly all my wildlife shooting with two bodies ( K 5 and K 7) and four lenses: DA*16-50/2,8 ; FA*80-200/2,8 ; Sigma 300/2,8 and Sigma 500/4,5 plus 1,4 X and 2 x TCs. The TCs are really a fallback option and do not get much use.
With this set I have pretty much my needs covered and I am not planning to add anything in the foreseeable future.

But what would it take to change this?
A 500/5,6 would not be sufficient. Simply too slow for the job! Despite all the recent advances in sensor technology there is just no substitute for lens speed in this type of photography.

A weather sealed 500/4 or a 600/4 with new-generation AF drive using DC motors ?..... Maybe....

Hear hear! Even if they don't do anything new to it, and just re-release the FA* 250-600/5.6 as it was, I'd still be happy.

my point exactly, hence my preference for a D-FA*400mm f/2.8 or D-FA*300mm f/2.8
