I bought my Kx kit with the 50-200 DA L. It's a pretty good lens and I liked the compactness - about the same size as the 18-55 kit. For that price though you could get the DA version here on the marketplace sometimes which has a hood and "quick shift" focusing plus the lens mount is metal.

Also, if you are looking for an affordable tele-zoom, you might want to consider the 55-300 DA L. I have it, its not bad at all.

If you are concerned about image quality, I'd save up a few more bucks and get a Pentax 55-300.

The 50-200 is more compact, but that is the only advantage.

I find bokeh to be another advantage of the 50-200. I have the WR version and its more consistent rendering of objects outside of focus is big for me. I owned the 55-300 in both its DA and DAL forms; for sharpness and contrast I found it to be a bit better than the 50-200, but more frequently its bokeh was a bit stilted - not always by any means, but more often on images that I took. Indeed your style will not match mine, so it's a tough call for us to tell you. Both are quite nice.

I would agree with jimr-pdx regarding the bokeh of the 55-300, in certain circumstances, it can be jarring. (see below - noting its a bad picture to start with).

In other cases, it takes decent shots: https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/mini-challenges-games-photo-stories/14970...ml#post1558077

Well it really depends what the OP is looking for. The 55-300 is significantly larger than the 50-200. I did like the bokeh on the 50-200. As far as sharpness, they are pretty close (or I just had a good copy).

I like the size of this lens, almost same as the kit. Mine is DA, was on sale during the WR debut of the same.

I'm gonna go ahead and buy this one. It's more in my budget at the moment and I need it for a trip to Texas to see my Brother graduate Airforce basic training in two weeks!

Thanks for all the responses, guys!
