Ask for opinions:

Right now there are two Sigma 30/1.4 lenses on local CL, both around $370, one Pentax, one Canon. I wonder which one I should get since I have two cameras.
LBA says both.

So, I took the lens out for a ride on Halloween night and got great results at 1.4
Surprised to find out that I didn't need flash much at all.
First is without flash, second with.
Also, 800 ISO.

I had pretty much made up my mind to make the jump to the 31mm FA Ltd...funding for which, would have to come from the Sigma 30mm as well as others.

Took the 30mm out again today....and I scratch my head wondering just how much better the 31mm would have preformed in this situation. Such a great lens....the wife's favorite....in that she's loved the family shots taken by this lens more than any other.

great shot, great colours!
What f stop is that on?

I like it a lot.
Focal Length is just...perfect.
Sharper than I expected, works amazing at night without flash, and auto focus is pretty good.
No complaints from me at all!

edit:
well, edge sharpness isn't great and whatnot, but I knew that before going in, so that's not really a con.
Also, when a subject is focused, nothing else really matters much since I like doing portraits.

glad you like it Ricky, at f1.4 good chance nothing in the corners will be in focus anyway!

How did you do that monochrome conversion? It's fantastic! The colors are so natural as if it were real colors!

It was shot at f3.2 Axl. Stopped down for the deeper DOF. A change for me....majority of the time, she's wide open.

I've always wanted the Sigma 30mm to provide the equivalent of a 'fast fifty' on APSC - more concerned with shallow DOF and background blur than speed per se. I have a copy of the lens now, and must say that it certainly does blur the background more than my Pentax 35mm f2.4. However I am not to sure about the quality of the bokeh - there's something ragged and 'triangular' about it:

Sigma 30mm f1.4:

Pentax 35mm f2.4:

Sigma 30mm f1.4 bokeh crop:

Pentax 35mm f2.4 bokeh crop:

So the Sigma wins on quantity of the bokeh, but the Pentax beats it hands down on *quality* I'd say!

With the subject at closer range, the background is blurred more, and the Sigma's bokeh problems go away:

So I am more impressed with it for portrait use than for medium range shots. On the other hand the background separation on the car shot above is hard to achieve on APSC, even if the Sigma doesn't do the job as smoothly as I would like.

Your copy does look quite triangular doesnt it.

My far backgrounds arnt as bad as that, but still remain some what circular

It almost looks like motion blur. Are other parts of the scene tack sharp? Was the foliage moving? The bokeh certainly looks unusual, it may even be your copy that does a funny distortion in a corner?

I certainly don't think that what you are seeing is typical for the Sigma 30/1.4's bokeh.

You should also note that one cannot really compare f/1.4 bokeh to f/2.4 bokeh. Even if both lenses are wide open there is still a different challenge to get the bokeh with the wider aperture look as smooth when pixel peeping.

I think if you want to compare the quality of the bokeh at the pixel peeping level, you have to keep the f-stop constant.
