Sorry to hear Steve, sounds like your copy may have a few problems can you send it in for an exchange?

TOUGEFC: Did you sharpen any of those images in post? I just don't recall my copy of this lens being that sharp wide open.
Just the default in lightroom.

Yeah. Amazon is great about that stuff; they'll even cross-ship. I'll shoot it this weekend and see if I've overlooked something, and if not, I'll send it back next week.

Do you export from LightRoom to the size you upload to PF? If so, do you have the default jpg export set to "sharpen for screen" or 'sharpen for print', or what? (curious)

For what it's worth, right now, when it gets the focus right - or when I manual focus it - I love the "look" the lens makes.

See, I went looking, and I keep getting sidetracked by the cheap 645s and 6x7s I always loved that 645.
I can recommend the 645 as well. It really does handle like a smaller format camera.

I took a couple of 30mm shots this morning, including 1 wide open (I have never really used it wide open because the DOF was too narrow, or it was too bright)

Shot @ f2.0

Shot @ f1.4 (wide open & uncropped)

100% crop (you have to open the full size of this to see true 1:1)
Good detail in the tire, not perfect but pretty good for f1.4 off centre IMO

Got the replacement from Amazon. It *appears* to be working better (still with a +5 fine af adjust), but I've noticed that if there's something farther away within the scope of the focus sensor, it picks that thing to focus on almost every time. Weird.

Anyway - my dog held still for me this morning:

This is much better Here's another dog shot - got her eyes right the first time. Weird thing, though; if I press the AF button, it locks; then I press it again, it adjusts, then again. After three taps like that, it's in focus most of the time.

Tried Pano for a change-
Full res is 54mp and looks unbelievable!

Love the Buddha! And the pano - although I can't see it here; I have to go to your flickr stream to see it.

For a resolution and sharpness junkie like me, stitching is DA BOMB.

Based on test results, I'd say the Sigma 30/1.4 is very sharp in the center of the field and terribly soft at the edges. So, it depends on your use of the lens.

I got my replacement and got it 'dialed in' and took it to a family gathering on Sunday. It focuses correctly, and I officially love this lens.
