Thanks for all the quick replies.

This gives me a lot to research.

Is there somewhere where I can get reliable ratings/comparisons between these various lenses? The photozone listings I have been looking at doesn't cover many of the lenses...
Check out this link I got at dpreview the other day.

It seems to be pretty comprehensive

If you dont mind buying 3rd party lenses, you can occasionaly find the Tamron Adaptall 2 300mm f/2.8 on ebay, or at other used camera sites, for $300-400 and the pentax adapter for around $25.. I do not own this lens personally, but a friend uses it with excellent results, and there is not much, if anything, else available that is as fast in your price range..
The Tamron adaptall2 300)2,8 is also a super match for Pentax 1,7x AF TC.
The extra 1,7x is very handy when (not if) you need extra reach.
It will give you a 500/4,5 AF lens. With a bit of patience you will find the TC at a reasonable price at ebay.

You will find some exsamples of this combo at
http://fototim.photosight.org
I still have a lot to learn, but this will give you a rough idea of what the combo is capable of.

I think you'd like two of my tele's-

-A 400mm A-series, F5.6. I got it on ebay for $400.
-A 80-320mm FA-zoom, F4.5-5.6. This one was from keh.com for under $300.

Check out shareasale.com/r.cfm?b=889257&u=523490&m=66875&urllink=keh.com- they've got great deals, and prices are low About 1/3 of my lenses are from them, and I have yet a complaint to give.
HI Adam,
I have a pentax -A 400mm lens F1:5.6 . How do I set up my K-511s to take pics with this lens??

Set the aperture ring to 'A'. (You have to push the little button on the ring to set it to A) When the camera asks for a focal length put in 400mm.

Thanks, Boris!
I'm having lots of fun with this lens.
