Recommendations for 300mm+ lens?

I'm looking for recommendations for a long lens for my K100 for use in wildlife photography.

I want/need to get quality shots with film SLR equivalent of 450mm plus.

Recommendations for primes or tele's, with and without TC's much appreciated.

There is a catch (the usual one). I'm looking at a max $500. available for this purchase...

I think you'd like two of my tele's-

-A 400mm A-series, F5.6. I got it on ebay for $400.
-A 80-320mm FA-zoom, F4.5-5.6. This one was from keh.com for under $300.

Check out shareasale.com/r.cfm?b=889257&u=523490&m=66875&urllink=keh.com- they've got great deals, and prices are low About 1/3 of my lenses are from them, and I have yet a complaint to give.

You may be able to find the smc Pentax-F* 300mm/4.5 or -FA* 300mm/4.5 second hand for a bit above your budget. Those are very sharp lenses, very sturdy, built like a tank. Autofocus.

Or consider the older, manual focus smc Pentax 300mm/4.0 lenses. This store actually has one, and I have but good experience buying from them:

Probably the best value for great optics in this FL would be the M*300 f4.0. It generally sells for US$350-450. I have the A* version(same optics) and am very pleased with it. It does have some CA @f4.0, but goes away when stoped down.

300mm Lens

There is no way at todays used prices that you will get a F* or FA* 300mm Pentax lens for $500, although it is a great lens and extremely sharp.

Even the A* lenses are going for more than that now days, but the M* may fall into your price range. Prices for used Pentax glass has gone out of control with the success of their new DSLR's and quite possibly will get worse in a week when the D10 comes out.

If you dont mind buying 3rd party lenses, you can occasionaly find the Tamron Adaptall 2 300mm f/2.8 on ebay, or at other used camera sites, for $300-400 and the pentax adapter for around $25.. I do not own this lens personally, but a friend uses it with excellent results, and there is not much, if anything, else available that is as fast in your price range..

I picked up one two months ago from a Canadian Vendor on ebay for $600 new. They had at least 1 more that did not sell. This is a very sharp lens. Do not remember name of vendor, will post if I find something,

Wow! Thanks!

Thanks for all the quick replies.

This gives me a lot to research.

Is there somewhere where I can get reliable ratings/comparisons between these various lenses? The photozone listings I have been looking at doesn't cover many of the lenses...

This site has a lot of quite qualified user opinions, which I think is more useful that some supposedly "accurate" resolution measurement:

Your best bet is to ask here or at dpreview, I think.

There is also Stan's:

But keep in mind that Stan hosts opinions, and some of them you may or may not find to be correct! Same goes here, but there is usually disagreement if someone says something completely off-base.

What do F*300mm go for in the US these days? Here in Australia cost me much more than US$500... Though worth every dollar ;-)

I have been using the Sigma APO 135-400mm F4.5-5.6 DG for three months now on my ist DL.

Although not as crisp-clear as my Pentax DA 50-200, the lens performs well, even in low-light contidions.
The lens is just fast enough for wildlife shooting, but if you really want extra zoom, you might want to add the 1,4 multiplier....

The lens should be available new for under 600 $. Spectacular lenshood and good carrying-bag included.

If you look on the Sigma site, the pictured lens is WITHOUT the lenshood ;-)

Up to $1000

With a $1000 limit buy the FA* or F* 300mm 4.5 IMHO it will compliment the cheaper zoom well IMHO..

One lens I have no intention of ever selling...

Ohh and add a Tamron 1.4x for extra reach...
