300mm f5.5 Optomax M42 Lens question

I just got a 300mm f5.5 Optomax M42 Lens and I noticed theres 2 modes on it. M and A. I was wondering what they're for because it doesn't have auto focus.

On an M42 camera body with the proper linkages the switch allows you to use the lens in Manual or Auto aperture mode. On a digital camera body (where you will have to use the lens with an adaptor) just use the M setting and meter with the lens set to the aperture you want to shoot at.
