Where are new lenses, HOYA?

2011:
?????

2010:

DA 18-135 is designed by graduating student.
DA 35/2.4 is light castration of old FA35/2

2009:

D-FA 100mm F2.8 Macro WR - old DFA 100 in WR body
DA 18-55mm F3.5-5.6 AL WR - old 18-55 in WR body
DA 50-200mm F4-5.6 ED WR - old 50-200 in WR body
DA 15mm F4 ED AL Limited (March, 2009)

2008 was really cool - SEVEN new lenses + new version of 18-55.

From March, 2009 till July, 2011 - only TWO new lenses...

some few lenses are missing, especially in top end (long tele for wildlife) but in the normal / short tele, there is some good offer.

if we focus only on lense design, not SDM issue or price. what do you feel is missing (putting beside the top end lenses) ?

Nikon has a similar pattern, except they have a larger catalog.

Well, the FA* 600/4 was a special order item and it really didn't make since for them to discontinue it. I guess they wanted to see more orders. However, it generally sold for msrp of ~ $8500 because it wasn't a shelf item.

Well I'm gonna put an add for my lens development survey here, since I do share this feeling:

https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/pentax-slr-lens-discussion/146454-wich-le...r-d-money.html

I also want some new lenses, but we al want something different. I have no idea to what extent lenses have to make salesnumbers, but even some of the currently produced lenses don't sell a lot I think.

Pentax is very busy with supporting three lensmounts I think, but that is not an excuse to put K-mount on a low site for a long time.

I think pentax should make:
  • some more DA-L lenses to extend the cheap lensline for entry-level and low-budget dslr users.
  • produce a long lens for wildlife.
  • a long and fast lens for sports and other purpose.
  • bring the 1.4x TC to go with some of the new and current lenses.
  • another wide-angle lens, since current Pentax userbase is very on the wide-angle.
  • SDM-II and implement it in current lensline, updating DA*lenses.

My personal votes on the survey where: DA 28mm/f2.8 Ltd; DA*135mm/f2.0; DFA200mm/f4 macro WR (or DFA*); DA*135-270mm/f2.8 and a DFA*1.4x TC.

I have no idea to what number the lensline can expand if the usergroup is only growing at current numbers. Bigger usergroup make it easier to expand lensline and spend money on development.

I agree that new glass is good but I think the mentality that lenses need to be replaced for the sake of change is a fallacy. Nikon has some lenses in their catalog that have been around a very long time including 8 manual focus lens among which is a 35/1.4.

Prime Lens | Manual focus lenses with Fixed Focal Length | Nikon

BH stocks these.

Does anyone think that it would be possible to develop some new lenses together with Kenko-Tokina and sell them as Pentax-brand for K-mount and under Tokina-brand for CaSoNiK? Sharing development costs is one thing, giving away your lenses is a different thing.

Lens range is a limiting factor for Pentax. I got the K-5 because of my old -M lenses, which are excellent (28 f2.0; 35 f2.0; 85 f2.0; etc) - but are too much trouble to use on the K-5; so I stick to film. The K-5 is optimized for autofocus, which I hate. These old optical designs are fine, but for the K-5 they need to design new autofocus mounts.
Nikon does have a better range of lenses, and I find the D7000 has a better finder for manual focus. I'm tempted to jump ship... I haven't owned a Nikon since the original "F" - but now...

I think we are overdue for some new lenses. 2010 was the year of the new Camera bodies, this year hopefully we'll see at least 2 new k mount lenses.

I for one though don't mind in the least if Hoya just repackage FA & FA* lenses in DFA clothes, I don't see it as a negative like ogl does. It's about the result, and if the result can be achieved with less investment/effort then great! It's not like the 100mm macro for example was flawed anyway, they made a smart move just repackaging that one.

I wish they would get the SDM bugs sorted out and update lenses to have SDM. I love my K-5s quiet shutter... hate the loud screw drive Also if they repackage the old FA/FA* lenses that could also lead them to a FF road! (Dreaming)
