Sigma 70-300 lens ?

I have just bought a Sigma 70 - 300mm F4 - 5.6 APO DG Macro lens.
I have not had a chance to use it yet, can anybody give me some ideas of what to expect from this lens?
I mainly take wildlife and family photos.

Thanks,

Mike

I've found you will likely need to increase the contrast +2 or +3 even, for best results. Otherwise, very flat and lifeless images...

That's a pretty harsh critique of the lens. I admit that the contrast can start to wash out at the 300 end, but flat and lifeless is a big exaggeration. I don't even have the APO version, but I'm still enjoying good results with my Sigma.

I'm reposting some images from a while back, mainly because I haven't uploaded any into Picasa recently. These were captured as JPG, with +1 sharpness, +1 saturation. The butterfly was taken with 0 contrast adjustment, the other three were actually -1 contrast.

190mm, 1/500s, f/8, somewhere around the macro/normal border

210mm, 1/60s, f/8, in the Macro range (Makes me love the shake reduction!)

250mm, 1/800, f/8

300mm, 1/1600, f/6.3

If you're going to use it at around the 300mm mark, I'd recommend keeping it around f8 if you can - it keeps it nice and sharp. When I first got the lens, I wasn't sure of it, but the more I've used it the more I like it. I find it's best used on a monopod for my shaky hands with SR enabled, at the long end.

Great photos and tips guys.
I am mainly using it for birds at the 300 end.
I have a K10 D, does the K100D take nicer shots in Jpeg or are they the same?
