Agree that for outside/good light shooting, the DA/L 55-300 should do it for you and for less than half the cost of anything else. For inside sports like gymnastics, etc it might be limiting because of the dark lighting...just depends on how close you can get. In our 5000 seat basketball arena (small), I can get great shots with it even 3/4 ways up in the bleachers. I've also used this lens at lure coursing events for whippets and I have been quite happy with the results.
