the white "pearl" is cosmetic, no application that affects operation.

The white pearl thing is a tactile element that lines up with the lens release switch on the camera body. It is there so you don't have to look to line up the lens when inserting into the camera body.

Do note, though, that it is positioned to align with the lens release lever on a vintage film camera - which isn't in the same position as the lens release button on the modern DSLRs. So it's not recommended for use with today's cameras.

..that must be right, because I was using the red dots (in lens and body) to align the lens to click in position with the body.

Yes, the red dots are the way to go for the modern DSLRs (unless your camera happens to have something in the same position as the old lens release lever - worth checking out).

I use the white pearl thing all the time to line the lens with any of the Pentax DSLR's I have owned. I find it very useful not having to look to line the lens up with the body. Especially in dark conditions.
