Getting to 300mm and Beyond....

Hi:

New Forum Member here..... Have a K10D and a *istD (but *istD likely going up for sale). "LOVE" the K10D but w/the rarity of availablilty of "Pentax Brand" 300mm or beyond options, I'm trying to figure out what to do until some '07-'08 releases hit the stores.

* Have considered a Sigma 70-200 2/8 w/a 1.4 (ro 2.0) extender, but even those are nearly impossible to find and the weight is a consideration for a "carry all day" option.
* Have considered a Sigma 70-300 APO DG or a Tamron 70-300 DI, but cannot find comparitive analysis on these lenses anywhere and overall, "user reviews" seem to be similar (some love 'em, some don't).
* Considered the Tokina 70/80-200 F/2.8, but those are no where to be found in a Pentax mount.

Any thoughts or considerations will be most welcomed. It is GREAT to not be tied to a "IS/VR" lens... :-).. but the alternative of that is the lack of availabiltity of options in Pentax mount.

Thanks much, Bob

I think it depends on how much do you want to spend???

- You could hunt down a F*300 on ebay (was my decision eventually after trying the other alternatives)

- Go for a Sigma 135-400 (it wasn't as good as my F*300 but it was much better than the Tamron LD 70-300 I had before it)..

- If you can find one the Sigma 70-200 is a very good option and actually in use I found it to be lighter than it looked like it would be...

Sigma 70-200 f2.8 is a great lens. Even with 1.4 extender is not too bad at all though you do sacrifice colour in that regard. The images are sharp wide open (slightly soft at 200mm wide open comparative to the rest of focal lengths). I would have to say the colour coming out of this lens is just amazing. Cheap at cameta auctions in US.

There is no ways you call this lens heavy. I consider this lightweight already and there is not really a choices for bright telephoto lenses in pentax lens line up at present. Everyone of us are waiting for DFA 200 and 300

I had seen Sigma 70-300 APO doing alright in the image sharpness department but the not consistent performance...

I had a few shots to illustrate the point of great colour rendition of this lens

Exceptional color w/the 70-200!!! Most impressive. And sharpness is exceptional as well in your shots. Thanks for posting.

Looky here!

I just saw this post on DPR. It might show you what differences there can be in photo quality in the 300mm range:

Funny- I knew what the better lens was before I read further down the thread.
