Problem with SMC-A 70-210 f4

I just purchased a 70-210 F4. Pentax SMC-A lens on Ebay. The zoom makes a slight scraping noise. Also, the rubber focus grip seems to move independently of the underlying metal ring. For example, you focus to the end, then you can keep turning the grip. (especially in the macro mode).

Is the rubber vs. metal grip movement normal for this lens? If so, I can live with the scraping noise.

I have seven days to return it.

I have also sent an email to Eric for a price estimate to CLA the lens and check it out.

I would appreciate any feedback from owners of this lens

No, the rubber should be affixed firmly to the lens. I have two copies and they have no scraping noise, nor does the rubber slip as you described.

Since your grip is loose, you can try peeling back the edge closest to the mount. There's an aluminum ring there with I think 4 screws. Loosen those a little bit and see if your scraping goes away. Too loose and you'll have zoom creep.

The rubber grip can be glued back on. Use something not terrifically strong, because the grip needs to be removable for disassembly or adjustment. I wouldn't use cyanoacrylate (super glue) or epoxy - maybe rubber cement instead.

Problem with SMC-A 70-210 lens

I am now debating if i should just return it. (I have the seven days on ebay). I saw an excellent condition one at KEH for $99. I paid $62, but it may need $70 worth of repairs.

On the other hand, if it is repaired it will most likely last years. There is no telling how long a used one from KEH would last.

I would return it. When one or two things are wrong, as here, there can be more issues with this copy.

KEH is usually pretty reliable in their rating.
