I had the Sigma 50/1.4 and still have the DA70. The Sigma, under the right circumstances, IS that good. But it front focussed. And the size and the weight, while I loved it at first, became cumbersome. The 50mm focal length on APS-C also felt neither here or there. Build quality on these two lenses are both great in different ways.

In low light settings, the difference in max aperture is negligible with a K-5. Sigma will yield much shallower DOF at apertures greater than f2.4, of course.

Sigma's bokeh is better in my opinion.

Here are some samples.

Sigma 50mm f1.4

Pentax DA 70mm f2.4 Limited

Below is ISO 6400.

And the last is ISO 12800.

I think you really need to decide what focal length *you* need. There is no way one should be trying to decide between a 50 and an 85; you might as well be trying to decide between a Coke and a chainsaw.

But also, depending on what you are planning on doing newspaper wide, I have to think AF would be a big plus. And that wider would beat longer most of the time, but one prime can't possible do everything you might need.

The title pretty much explains most of it! The lenses will be paired with the Pentax K-5, and I am mostly doing portraits and newspaper photos! Any opinions will help.

If you can suggest anything cheaper that is still good, that would be fantastic!
For the newspaper photos stuff, I would want something like the 35mm f2.4. 50 would be workable, 70 would be frustrating (but nice for portraits).

If you dont hve a lot of control over the situation you might want to consider a zoom. The tamron 28-75 f2.8 is fast, does portraits well, and also wider stuff for your newspaper photos.

If it had to be one of the two you suggest, the 50 for sure. 70 is not versatile enough for eveyday. That said, I would not be bothered about whether it was te Sigma 50, the Pentax 50, or some other 50 (plenty of cheap manual lenses to pick from).

Budget is 600 and below. No more than that!

I would LOVE to have Af, but I can do without if necessary.

f1.4 would be great because I do have some concerts and such
With this budget I would get the DA 70/2.4 (great lens) and perhaps a couple of manual focus lenses to round things out. For another hundred or so you should be able to grab a M 50/1.4 and maybe an M 28/2.8 to give yourself a small system which would cover most of your described needs. Of course you will have to deal with the limits of no AF or AE but it can be done.

i would go for 70mm f/2.4 or Sigma 50mm 1.4. Not the Fa50mm - I just found it being too soft with too low contrast and build quality, while not bad,not impressive either
