Can we expect cheaper Macro lens from Pentax?

I just found out that Nikon is going to release 40mm f2.8 macro lens for 279$ available here for pre order. Can we expect something like this from Pentax soon?

Cheers
Guna

We already have a 35mm F2.8 macro. Why would we want a 40mm version?

But at 699$ it is far more expensive than the Nikon one that too shorter in focal length. I general Nikon lenses are expensive than the Pentax's. So I feel if Nikon can do it why not Pentax?

dunno why the Nikkor is so inexpensive

El cheapo construction?
Loss leader?
bigger market share = less loss per unit over the life of the product?

El cheapo construction looks likely to me.

The Da35 macro has been hailed as one of the best auto focus lenses of all time. I rather doubt the Nikkor will have that said about it.

not one of these "canolysigsonpenilikon came out with a new lens I want *name disgruntled camera owners camera brand here* to come out with a new lens(preferably a lens identical to the competing manufacturers) too" threads.

If you aren't happy with the Pentax DA35mm f/2.8 limited then go ahead, by a Nikon and buy the new nikkor 40mm f/2.8 macro. I'm quite sure that buying DA35mm f/2.8 limited would be much cheaper than switching camera systems altogether. The DA35mm f/2.8 has superior construction quality than the Nikkor and I'm sure it will be more than a match for optical quality when they compare the two lenses - not that there is much point in doing so, the DA35 is extremely good even when compared to current Zeiss glass.

Pentax's macros are all high-end lenses right now- the DFA 50mm and 100mm are both FX (full-frame, if I dare use Nikon's smart terminology) and the 35mm is "Limited" because it's sharp.

If you want to spend less, a Sigma 50mm is out there for $369:

The Pentax D FA 50mm f2.8 Macro is also an excellent lens (very well reviewed here on the forum) and can be found for a similar price used. My copy is very sharp and focus is spot-on. I don't know anything about the Nikon lens, but I can't imagine it would outperform the Pentax.

Considering Pentax has a macro prime lens at 35mm, 50mm, and 100mm I would guess there is zero chance of there ever being one at 40mm at any price. So if that FOV is make-or-break, you might need to switch.

Good luck!

If you want a cheap macro, you are probably better off going with the Tamron 90 or, Sigma 105. They are plenty sharp and nice lenses and quite a bit cheaper than the Pentax offerings.

Why not a DA35/2.4 & a Raynox. That will get you 35 macro for less than $250.

I just don't see the possibility. I mean currently in that focal length range, Pentax has a 35 mm f2.4, a 35 mm f2.8 (which is also a macro lens), a 31 mm f1.8 and a 40mm f2.8. If anything, Nikon is copying Pentax, but trying to do it at a cheaper price.

If Pentax was going to release a cheap macro, I would think it would be in a longer focal length.

Of course it is possible, though a 40mm f/2.8 macro lens would be completely redundant considering the existence of the DA35mm f/2.8 Macro Limited - as expensive as it is, which is nothing compared to the astronomical prices top of the range macro lenses command like the Voigtlander 125mm f/2.5 APO Lanthar or the Pentax FA*200mm f/4 ED Macro.

no point for Pentax on making such lens, they already have one at 35mm. that would just be plain stupidity if they would consider making another macro lens at such focal length and that close.

cheap macro would be nice, but to what extent does such lens would have to suffer? I'm quite tentative to buy a macro lens with poor construction and sub-standard macro IQ.
