I agree, there's no coating on the broken glass, OTOH, we don't know how it affected the front element.

I'm not sure it's the filter glass, it seems really thick just for UV glass.

OTOH, as Raybo stated, there is no coating reflection.... strange

I literally cringed at the sight of that. What a horrible, sh*tty thing to happen...

and the sad part is it's not even about the money cause that lens is out of production now...

Looks like it's a broken filter only. The clue is that the outside of the lens filter rim should be smooth. The picture indicates it's a filter rim. Also, there is another thread behind the filter rim in your picture, and that's where the actual lens front glass sits.

According to the optical formula (found on Dimitrov site) the first element is an ED element; in this case it appears that Pentax always protect it by a flat filter element - that is the case on my FA*600; so +1 also for a broken filter "only"

I ordered some mechanical spare parts for my FA*80-200 last year. It did take a while, but Pentax was still supplying spares for it. Hope you can get what it takes to fix this one!

Unless all that broken glass has scratched the crap out of the front element. That would be a major bummer.

It looks to me like the front element is a bit scratched behind that filter. But if the scratches are small, it might still not affect IQ significantly.

Was the lens shipped in a box? Bubble wrapped inside an envelope is *not* enough protection for any lens. I would not even ship a $20 lens that way.

I shipped it the only way the post office allowed me to. In a bubble wrapped envelope with lots of newspapers inside. I told the woman behind the counter that this lens was valuable and she told me it was OK, but obviously it wasn't. The front element was also scratched, but the case is still for processing at the norwegian postal service.

Norwegian postal services won't let you ship a box? Lens like that (or any lens for that matter) should be in bubble wrap, in case, in bubble wrap, in newspaper and in box...
One bubblewrapped envelope is painfully not enough protection..
Lesson learned
