I have that camera and that lens(gift), they are both fine, but there are better ways to spend your lens budget. Are you buying these things used? If you only want one lens you might try to find the 18-250 on ebay or in the market.

18-200mm

I am planning to buy new. I have decided on pentax k-r body . i am confused if i have to buy 18-55 and 55-200/55-300 or just 18-200 directly. I have not used dslr and this is my first buy. so i am unsure about it. Your response will be very helpful.

Apologize for using big font. I did not realize it. I pasted the contents from website and did not alter them.

You can buy just the camera and a lens separately, however, I've found you can buy the camera and the 18-55 lens at BuyDig.com for the same price as you can buy the body alone. Go to BuyDig.com and add the camera to your cart and the price will be 599.00 and then use the coupon code BuyDigClub30 and the final price will be 569.00. That's cheaper than the body alone on amazon, so might as well have a free lens. The 55-300 lens is highly regarded, if you can find a kit with that lens included it might be worth it to you. You won't need the 18-200 in that case. The 18-200 lens is a walk around lens that does most things, but doesn't do them as well as multiple lenses. The trade off is the quality of your images vs the convenience of having only one lens on the camera.

My suggestion would be to buy the kit from BuyDig and find a 55-300 DA L on ebay for 200 dollars. That would give you a total price of 769.00 (569.00 + 200). If you can beat the price for that combo anywhere go for it. I would not recommend the 18-200 unless you have money to spare and want the convenience of a single lens.

Glad I could help. Here is a link to a 55-300 DA-L on eBay. You might also consider picking up a cheap hood for it.

Hmm that link has a 52 dollar shipping fee, look for a different one, but that's about the price you should pay for the auction. Also check the marketplace on this forum first.

Several good auction prices with hi shipping out there, shop carefully. Also consider the da50-200, a decent lens that gets 'punished' for not being the 55-300 I swapped a dal 55-300 for it, very few regrets; its smaller size means it goes more places.

You're right jimr it gets punished because it's not the 55-300. 200 is too short

I often shot at 300mm in too-low light so stopping at 200 yields better images - but most are better at learning from mistakes than I!
You may note I have a far less talented 100-300 in my kit, but that's for rare use only.
