Use wireless flash with large soft-box-like diffusor as lumiquest 124 type. That's what I'm doing for this kind of shots. I take a lot of pictures of people in costumes at SF conventions. I use FA*24 a lot, also FA35, sometimes DA14 for fun. The DFA50 is used as well, but less.
