Well I don't know these lenses, but the difference in FOV isn't that big. The difference between f1.4 and f1.8 isn't at that focal length in terms of DOF also not so big.

Two tests from both lenses from the same tester:
Sigma 30 mm f/1.4 EX DC HSM review - Introduction - Lenstip.com
Sigma 28 mm f/1.8 EX DG Aspherical Macro review - Introduction - Lenstip.com

Well that 28mm isn't so good I guess.

I would take this test with a BIG grain of salt. Apparently they got bad copies. All of the wide aperture sample shots are front focused. If the lens behaved as badly as they measured / experienced it, I would not have kept it.

I cannot speak to the lens' full frame performance but my copy must be a lot better than what they have tested.

I remember the LensTip test from when I was considering the lens and it nearly made me change my mind. However, I saw much better sample shots elsewhere and the lens came with a big recommendation by Peter Zack who has used it for wedding photography. He was full of praise for it. He might be using it still.

I wish more photographers would take everything with a good dose of salt.

Pophoto was also quite enthusiastic. They wrote:
SQF data for the 28mm f/1.8 indicate excellent overall imaging performance.
They have taken down the original test but it still can be found in a web archive.

Pophoto gives the lens an "A+" rating even at f/1.8 up to a print size of 8x10 (see the "Wide, wider, widest: Superspeed Sigma trio" PDF file). I guess Pophoto is a bit over enthusiastic but the Sigma 28/1.8 EX is definitely a lot better than the LensTip review would make it seem.

Class A and Ron Henricks you two can cite camera tests until your fingers bleed from all the typing, but at the end of the day there is this simple inescapable fact: The sigma 28mm f/1.8 full frame lens on a DX format sensor will outperform the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 lens which is designed for DX format when it comes to corner-to corner sharpness. This is because you are using the central "sweet spot" of the full frame lenses imaging circle.
