Looking at some lenses on eBay, help me decide

Hey everyone, new member here. I just got my k-7 yesterday and I can't wait to take some amazing photos!

I've decided that I want a 28mm lens. I found two on eBay that I am considering. Since I'm sort of new to all of this, I was hoping someone here could point me in the right direction.

The first lens is a RMC Tokina II 28mm. I'm considering it because it's not very expensive and I found some sample photos on Flickr that looked pretty good. I should note that the guy on Flickr said that he needed to push in the aperture pin to make it work with his Pentax. I assume that's not a big deal?

The other lens is by a company called Underground, which was apparently just a camera shop in Boston that sold lenses under their own name. I found a thread on here where somebody mentioned them and said that they usually had respectable companies make the lenses for them and that the quality was fairly good. The price is a little high but not bad if it's a quality lens and the shipping is free.

What would you guys do? Does anybody know anything about either lens? Is there another lens I should be looking for? I know about the SMC Pentax lenses but they seem to be going for around $100 and that's a bit more than I want to spend right now. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi, Welcome to the Forum and congratulations on the K7. I have a couple of questions first off. Did you pick up the K7 - body only or with a kit lens? If you have the body only, I would recommend the kit lens first for several reasons. Its more versatile, its auto focus and auto aperture. It will give you a range of focal lengths (its a zoom), and you would probably be more successful with it initially. They also run from about $30 to $60 on ebay. It is also a very decent lens in terms of quality... Now on to your original question. First, I do not see the Underground lens as being any bargain. Here is a bit of information on it...That said, I believe that Tokina is a better bet, especially in the $30 or so price range. The lens on your link is an all manual lens (focusing and aperture). It should be pretty good. Tokina builds good lenses. Here is a review on it.

If you're patient and hunt a bit, you can find some very nice K-mount Pentax lenses under $50. And they require no fiddling to make them fit or work on your K-7. If you get the genuine screwmount adaptor, you have an even larger selection of low-priced lenses from which to choose.

I used to have the RMC Tokina 28/2.8 MF. Wouldn't recommend it. While sharp lens, it's colours were kind of blah, contrast nothing to write home about and flare resistance was practically nil.

But at certain conditions it is capable of delivering some goodies:

Yes, I got the kit lens.

Thanks for the replies, everybody. I think I'm going to pass on both lenses. I'm just so anxious to get one that it's hard to wait for the right one to come along, but I'm going to make myself do it.

One last question. What about the lens that this guy is selling?

The Sigma Mini Wide is a very good lens, buy you might find one with auto-aperture for $10-20 more.

Never mind on that Rokinon lens. I did some Googling and I think I answered my own question.

I just bit the bullet and bought this SMC Pentax lens. It looks like it's in good shape and $80 seems to be a fair price (but not great) judging by what others are going for on eBay. I know it has absolutely nothing to do with the lens, but I like that it comes with the case.

I went to the beach yesterday with the k-7 and I brought the kit lens. My LBA hazed mind forgot just how good it can be. I have that m28 also, great walk around lens. However, with the k7, it is still probably an outdoor lens or with good lighting and or flash.

With the kit lens you are set for a wide range of opportunities. Here is the review from the lens database...
... and here is another...
I would not worry at all about the average price listed in the forum's lens database as no one knows when the lenses were bought - yesterday or 20 years ago.

Hin mentions the metering problems with Taks, have to say that that metering problem doesn't exist on the K-7. I don't have to make any EV adjustments like i did with the K100D. Kind of funny since the K100D only had 1 EV left after I adjusted +2 for the m42 lenses, and the K-7 I can leave at 0 and it has 5EV.

I think you overpayed for your M28 but I like mine a lot. I've posted some photos recently in the M lens club with.

Currently 28mm is my favorite walk around lens. I must resist the urge to buy a takumar 28 also...

I failed there, bought the Tak first and the M second. I really should sell one.

I also think the M28/2.8 price was too high. Sometimes we overpay but eventually don't mind because the results are great. And sometimes we slap ourselves on the forehead for years afterward, muttering WHAT WAS I THINKING?!?!? That's why I try to focus on cheap deals now. Like the week I got a Vivitar-Kiron 28/2.5 for US$20, then an Tamron BBAR 28/2.5 for US$4, then a Vivitar-Komine 28/2 CFWA for US$18. (My M28/2.8 was US$33 but that was a couple years ago. It's the costliest of my fifteen 28's.) Even my Access-Tokina 28/2.8 macro was just US$27. I've seen other 28/2.8's labeled Vivitar, Sears, Focal, sell in the under-20-bucks range lately. There's lotsa good cheap glass out there, ya just gotta find it.
