Squeaky lens

I just acquired a Pentax-F 50mm f1.7, and the lens makes a sqeaking noise at the end of the shutter. The sound seems to be caused by moving the aperture lever. The sound doesn't seem like it is coming from the blades, but rather from the lever itself.

Can I oil the lever? Is it safe to try? I've clicked the shutter ~100 times, and the noise might be getting less, or maybe not. Should I wait this out longer, or see about having the lens CLAed sooner rather than later?

Well, don't use WD40 or spray oil, whatever you do.

there is a special lubricant you should use, or you can ask someone at a lens and camera repair shop to do it for you.
but unless the noise is really loud and annoying and sounds generally bad, I'd just leave it..

Let me borrow a page from my dad's Standard Advice Book, When my mom would mention that the car was making a funny noise, he'd say, "Turn up the radio."

The blades stay open on the camera until you press the shutter button. Then they stop down to the selected aperture before the shutter opens. If you have overexposure at smaller apertures, say f8 to f22, the blades aren't closing quickly enough. It might be worth checking out but if you have this symptom. The actual mechanism is complex because of the aperture ring, so you'd have to remove the mount and look at all of the parts involved. Oil can migrate to the blades and stick them together so they don't work at all, creating a worse problem then a little squeak.

Dave is correct. Be very careful about applying lubricants to the mechanism of any lens. A likely cause of your squeek is a mildly bent lever. What I would suggest is that you determine if the aperture mechanism operates freely off-camera. Should lubrication be indicated, there are specialty lubricants made for watches and other fine mechanisms. These are applied with the tip of a pin or toothpick with a wick applied to soak up any excess.

The lens exposes correctly at f8 and at f22.

Manually moving the aperture lever (quickly) causes the squeaking sound.

If I were to try to lubricate this, I'd want to remove the lens mount, identify the exact point of squeaking, and apply as little grease/oil as possible?

Or maybe just pay to have it fixed or get used to it?

For those stumbling on the topic in the future, this seems related:

I'll live with the noise, and see if it gets better or worse.

Thanks everyone.

I wouldn't oil Anything in a lens. If the lever is squeaking, it's rubbing on something. Oil will only travel and eventually wind up on the blades. Then you have a Real mess to clean up.
