LBA: 1.4L on A*300/2.8 (and AF1.7tc)

Hey guys,

Guess what, I'm out of town once a year, and bump into a seller offering me a L 1.4x TC to go with my A*300/2.8. (You know, it is the grey teleconverter pointing way into the lens tube. Not to be used with short lenses.) Now I know it is a great thing, producing far better images than the cheap third party 2x-converters. It is in very good shape. Pretty clean, and no damage...

BUT... I already have the AF1.7x

Do you have experience combining these three components? Will the AF converter still work when I pile the 300mm and the 1.4xTC on it?

Recently I saw one of those 1.4L tc's sold on byebay for 192 EUROS, and the shop where I saw this thing is asking about the same price. Is that a fair price? Or should I negociate tens of euro's off the price?

Thanks for sharing your thoughts and experiences with me!

Yeah, I have used this combination a bit. It is nevertheless a better combination than any others I could think off. Due to the drought and the dying birds in my state, I have solely used A 300 f2.8 for market candids ( a project I am doing)

Again, using this AF 1.7 with A 300 f2.8 requires at least a stop down to make a reasonable image. The near focus really saves time since manual focus does take time. My AF 1.7X does a bit of backfocusing so I will fine tune the lens a bit before pressing the shutter.

Using the combination with a monopod is a must. Even in intense Australian sun, it is often still too dark to use...

A few examples here

Hope these shots help all mainly about f5.6 or f6.3

Wow, those are nice shots!

They helped to convince myself that the offer was not very bad, and that maybe I would find myself looking anxiously for a second chance offer later on, when I would not buy it now.

I went back to the shop, talked for a while and then asked if they would sell the converter for 90% of the price on the label.

And they agreed to do so! Now I am happy. Hopefully will post some shots with it shortly.
