Wow, I am late to the thread.

I own all 3 of the lenses under discussion and concur down the line.
At the wide end, the da16-45 is sharper and less distortion, at 135mm the da55-300 is slightly sharper.
The da18-135WR is not tops at anything but good enough; quiet, decent range, nice build and sealed. A fine lens for less than $300. Too bad it costs so much more.

I'll add to that as well. I've owned all three, although I no longer own the 16-45. Both the 16-45 and 55-500 are better in their respective ranges. The 55-300 also had the distinct advantage of having far more reach than the 18-135. That said, I still think the 18-135 is a very useful lens and I have no regrets about choosing to keep it to supplement my other glass. It's certainly not the best piece of glass I have in my collection, heck, it might be the worst lenses I own (optically). But it is the only lens I have that covers that kind of range, is small, quiet and WR. So there's always that

I am not an 18-135mm fan. My sample had worse image quality than the 18-55mm kit lens. Everything from center and corner sharpness, CAs, etc.

Like others have said, the lens should be priced at around $300 or less considering its image quality.

Depends on your requirements. I sold my da18-250mm and da18-55WR to pay for the da18-135WR. Best combo of WR and range available and a new cool motor. If you NEED more than 135mm then you have an answer. Ok, I also was tired of the ever present zoom creep in the da18-250 even after paying for it to be tightened up some.
I did not get to do a head-to-head compareson between the 18-250 and the 18-135 but I was only impressed by the 18-250's range; not IQ, speed or much else. Not bad, just not impressive. Kinda like the 18-135 I guess but its pics are starting to look better to me now that I am actually shooting from a kayak with it.
